Refused booze in tesco again

Yes, it can be a bit embarassing and awkward, but it is the only way we will stamp out the sale of alcohol to minors. They will always be able to access alcohol, but someone must have supplied it somewhere. An adult is always to blame where minors are consuming alcohol.
So are you saying that every person, even if they look 50 should be ID'd each and every time they buy a drink from a bar too?
Have you ever worked in a pub or a bar? You'd be laughed out the door.
I get your sentiments, but on a practical level, it just doesn't work. At some stage, you have to trust your employees to be able to use their brains and common sense. Otherwise, your business is going to suffer."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
What annoys me most is when I get Id'd to get into a nightclub and then I spot people who I know for a fact are under 18. I can understand everyones frustrations at having to provide ID, but these are the same individuals that then complain when gangs of youths are vandalising their local area. If we all accepted the fact that we must provide ID when necessary then society would surely be a better place.0

Doesn't seem to work for the nightclub you mentioned.0 -
On the subject of ridiculous behaviour... my 24 year old friend got refused a lottery ticket because she didn't have ID. Haha bless her.
I was with my sister (she's 20, I'm 17) when she was buying alcohol in Tesco a month or two ago and they refused to serve her because I was with her. The alcohol wasn't even for me and this was obvious. We walked into Co Op instead and she bought it there. It's their loss, Tesco are the ones losing custom...0 -
Stick to the corner shops, big chains like tescos have intoroduced stupid policies and only them will lose out.Total payment recieved from GPT etc as June: £0.000

I remember working in a (kind of well known) bar. It was busy and I id'd this woman (she did look over 18 but we'd all just had a bollocking about think 25 etc etc) I id'd her and she stated that she didn't have ID. Got quite upset about it aswell. My supervisor then said that he knew her and to serve her. I did, I mean after all supervisors know best! Pah turns out she was 17!!!! Luckily another member of staff heard the supervisor tell me to serve or I woulda got the boot lol.
Left the job not long after ...
So think 25 isnt such a bad thing. Although iding someone who is clearly an OAP or such is a bit OTT!!!!
Im just waiting on a supermarket refusing to sell me alcohol because my 7 week old son hasnt got ID rofl!!0 -
As someone who works for Tesco ( Checkouts ) I just want to put my side across.
As a member of staff, if we are cuaght selling alcohol to anyone under age , then its the member of staff who gets the £5k fine, possible jail sentence, and lost a job.
The increased age threshold was introduced to protect both staff in stores selling alcohol/age restricted items to minors ( will also refuse to people who are already under the influence, and anyone who we suspect may be buying the item for a minor ) Would you rather that stores were not so strict on items, and you find one of your loved ones in a ditch out of his or her face on vodka/cider, or ends up hospitalised from glue sniffing, firework abuse or anything else?
If you have been asked for ID at a Tesco ( or any other store ) then how hard is it for you to take a form of ID with you ( Passport, Driving Licence, or a recognised photo id )Kent Bird!:beer:0 -

Why on earth would I carry a valuable item such as a passport round with me? Not everyone has a driving licence (especially in London, where only idiots drive IMO). When I turned 18 I had a photocard from some sort of national scheme proving my age to get into bars (interestingly I went to a Northern university where most of my peers had never seen such an item). I'm in my 30s now so don't expect to have to spend time (and money on photos) applying for one again.
And no I don't think there should be national ID card scheme either. They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -
Why not? Many people carry more "valuable" items around than a passport! You can get id cards from apporved places ( some are free )
If you look under 25, then you are going to asked to prove your age, like it or lump. Its isnt you who is risking their job/a fine/jail sentenceKent Bird!:beer:0 -

As well as being expensive to replace, loss of a passport leaves you vulnerable to ID fraud. Hence people rarely carry them round except en route to the airport. People are used to carrying ID cards as spotty teenagers, not as adults who've been drinking legally for years (and paying taxes and other grown up stuff). I pointed at my crows' feet the last time someone asked me my age when buying booze and that seemed to suffice.
The problem with underage drinking is poor parenting, lack of opportunities for teenagers and poor policing. Also not helped by stupidly cheap booze in supermarkets- I don't mind paying more to ensure less tw@ttish behaviour all round. They are an EYESORES!!!!0
