Refused booze in tesco again

I think the "looking 25" policy is ridiculous and it's very flawed because in some cases, how old somebody looks is all about perception. I can never tell how old somebody is, I could maybe tell you roughly but not exactly. And how does a 25 year old look anyway?
I was thrown out of a bookies a little while ago because she said I didn't look 25, so we went round the corner to a different one and they were fine.
And the not serving people who have children with them is a joke. How many parents are going to leave their kids standing by themselves so they can get served? Like somebody else said, you can give a child alcohol in the home anyway so as long as the person paying for it can prove they are 18, then there shouldn't be problem.
If kids are going to drink underage, they're going to do it and this daft policy won't stop them one bit. Think happy & you'll be happy

Only if the adult's wish/need for alcohol is greater than their concern for their child(ren)'s safety, surely?
And that's exactly how some people are. There are plenty of chavs round where my sister lives that would put their childs safety at risk in order to get some beer, so very sad but so true. Think happy & you'll be happy

I've never had any problem buying wine or beer when shopping with my 14 year old daughter at Morrisons, Tescos, Sainsburys or any other supermarket. In Morrisons last week my daughter helped me choose the wine for my friend's birthday present in clear view of the staff - seems like there is some old fashioned commonsense out there!
I can see that if a gaggle of giggling young teens are skulking about the alcohol aisles with an 18 year old who promptly loads his/her basket with 20 bottles of Lambrini this would be somewhat suspicious. However, to refuse to serve a six pack of beer to a 40 year old man who happens to have his 4 year old toddling along by his side is ridiculous.
If we take this absurd policy one step further adults should perhaps be prevented from buying glue, aerosols, carving knives, paracetamol (all of which are commonly sold in supermarkets) whilst in the company of minors, 'just in case' it was going to be passed on to the child. Supermarkets are full of items that can potentially do harm to people of all ages if they are abused or passed on to a minor - alcohol is just one such item.0 -
As I have said beforein this thread I don't object to being asked for I.d, I am 28 and have my driving licence in my wallet at all times but I was very offended at being refused a bottle of wine with my weekly shop purely because i had my two children (both under 3) in the trolly. The checkout woman said its company policy as I may be passing it on to a minor.
The question is where does it end. What if i left the kids and hubby at home and went shopping myself?? I have a picture of my kids in my wallet which would be visible when i opened it to retrieve the money, would that then mean i could possibly be passing it on to a minor.
Actually it reminds me of a 'discussion' I had with a guy in sommerfield with my dad. Dad was buying some Alcohol, lager wime and a few spirits, it was his 30th wedding anniversary and they were having a BBQ, I had been sent to make sure he bought the right stuff anyway young guy on checkouts says to my dad 'i'm sorry sir but company policy is I have to ask every 5th customer for proof of age, do you have any sir' my dad says only his paper driving licence or his credit cards, guy behind checkout says well in that case i will not be able to serve you. I say well I have ID and this is my dad so will that do because obviously he cannot me a minor with a daughter in her 20's and he say no but you can hand me the money as I have seen proof you are over 18. Its backwards when a 60+ year old can be refused alcohol because he might be a minor.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000 -
Lilacpixie that is absolutely insane! I don't see how they can refuse to serve you if it's very clear that you are old enough. I think I would have told them stick it, gone somewhere else and then wrote a letter to complain! Think happy & you'll be happy

At work we are told to only accept. UK Passports, UK Driving Licenses (Full or Provisional), National Identification Cards or ID Cards with the PASS Hologram. A supervisor may accept other types if called over but that is what we are told to only accept. This is Sainsburys btw but I'm sure Tesco will have the same policy.
I don't have any of these. Just as well I don't drink or smoke:A
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

Me just buying it was alot easier than going elsewhere due to location at the time.
I now refuse to shop in tesco's I buy wine most weeks either for drinking or for cooking and their is absolutly no point in me buying have my list in one shop then having to go elsewhere for some of it.
Ironically i have two family members who actually work in the Customer Service Centre in Dundee. I have made my displeasure known :rotfl:MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000 -
I have read these threads about the whole supermarket policies in serving alcohol with minors with a smile on my face - I find the whole thing needs to be put into that catagory with the 'world gone mad'
IMO the cashier/server is damed if they do and damed if they don't. They have been given guide lines to adbide by and they try to do it in order to save their job!
I have never been refused alcohol which would be included in my shopping and my 3 and 8 year old are always with me?!?The shinbone is a device for finding furniture in a dark room.:TBig thanks to all competition posters:T0 -
My daughter worked for our local Asda for a couple of years whilst at Uni. She's well known to her past co workers. She is now 21. She tried to buy alcohol a couple of weeks ago and was refused because she did not have ID. Both the operative serving and the Duty Manager, who both knew her and both knew her age (attended her 21st party_ refused to serve her without ID. They cited Company policy??
A member of staff was serving another member of staff in Sainsbury's the other night. Chatting away, and she got to a bottle of wine. Asked - "Have you got your ID, luvvy? You know I have to ask." Why does she have to ask? She clearly knew the girl very well (from the conversation they were having) and very probably knew how old she was. Why did she need to ID her if she knew she was over 18?0 -
I just think the world's gone totally barmy.
Everyone's so scared they may get "done" these days they're afraid of doing anything.
Talk about being treated like children.
Being of the older generation I find it amuses me when I hear of things like this with alcohol.
It's supermarkets like Tesco's fault there are so many young drinkers.
When there were only local off licences that sold alchohol at set times of the day there was'nt so much of a problem with teenagers getting stoned out of their brains on cheap drink.
Has anyone seen the Asda mag this month,so much for money off coupons off useful products.
Nearly every one in there is for alcohol.0
