hi, i'd not realised my insurance would have this 'assumption' that i or anyone else in household is not or has not been bankrupt. i've never been asked on a comparison site or on phone. i'll now have to go and read the small print.

i agree with op and others and feel its certainly not fair we're penalised for life so yes i've written to councillors and msp. i did notice when sending them emails they block copy/pasted text so i'm not sure if they'll receive it. i did tweak the text and added my name so we'll see and i'll let you all know.
  • Not all insurers do this universally, but a good number do. It's like PixiePie says, what if the bankruptcy happens in your 20's and you meet someone in your 60's? This will probably never come up in conversation with them, apart from when it's time to sort out the underpinning and you're left with a bill for thousands, unable to pay.

That's why this matter is so important.

here is the latest reply I have received from my own MP.
Thank you for this. I will certainly look into this. Change in legislation would have to come from the Government. It is likely that there will be some proposals for changes to some financial regulations in the new legislative programme announced in the late autumn. However, it is unlikely to include changes to the provisions for bankruptcy. I will speak to the relevant government ministers and see what the prospects are for any changes.

In relation to insurance premiums, these are entirely down to the insurance companies. It would be a good idea, if you want to press for changes, if you joined up with a number of other people with similar experiences and problems so that you could lobby collectively

not too bad a response I guess, will see if hear anything further though.

  • so maybe it's worth lobbying say the insurance ombudsman - don't they deal with fairness of the insurance industry?

I think it's rather sad that this is only running to 4 pages and that 20% of people are bothered enough to vote that they won't be writing to anyone about the matter. Just goes to show that selfishness is alive and well in our fabulous country!

Seriously people, it takes about 2 minutes to write on the contact your MP website. Isn't 2 minutes of your time worth it for a good deed? And even if you hate BRs and think they get everything they deserve for the rest of their life - do their families and future families deserve it too? Have a heart and just copy and paste one of the letters on here, seriously you could help make a massive difference to many hundreds of thousands of people's lives (those that are BR as well as those that aren't!!)

  • Got a letter from my MP Jim Fitzpatrick this morning

"this is a note to let you know i have written to the ministry of justice regarding your concerns, and i will be back in touch with you when i receive a response to my letter"
Look down your nose at me and I thumb my nose back at you. :p

This is the problem. You are doing OK then a customer doesn`t pay up. I have had this in the past, thankfully not ruining me. I think it is often the case that folk go bankrupt through no fault of their own. It is something that I feel strongly about.

I agree totally. I'm going bancrupt due to people I did business with going under and not paying me, and a grant that I was awarded not turning up becuase they made a mistake and there was no money left KABOOM! Down I went...I feel so very angry to be at the end of a toppling row of dominoes...I've never had much credit and lived well within my means...and to add insult to injury, I'm judged as a reckless incompetent for years to come

...but you live and learn, eh?

Its the after effects of br that worry me (see City Slickers post and others) Why the heck should your car insurance go up just because you are BR?

Its like you are judged by all companies as a rat-bag who is financially as dependable as a chocolate fireguard through no fault of your own in many cases. I don't want credit, never really had credit and just want to be asked to pay the same for a service or product as if I was not BR! It just adds expensive insult to expensive injury - a money making ploy to get even more money out of people who haven't got any at all

I've lots to look forward to if this is how I'm going to be dealth with.

Now, off for a cup of tea and a calm down :coffee::rotfl:

a money making ploy to get even more money out of people who haven't got any at all

Which is clearly what it is - if they could get away with charging more for (I am *not* being discriminatory with this!!) Asian homosexual bird owning train spotters they would, but equality laws prevent the first bits - they manage to hike it up for other things such as employment, with very thinly based 'statistics' for various professions as a way to make more money, so why not use BR's as another source of higher premiums? I'm sure there are lots more groups out there that they make a bomb out of.
But the point here is of course that we are finally standing up for it and making them answer to the case - well, that's the plan lol.

    Hello City Slicker

I know in the USA the time limit is 10 years for a bankrupt to declare that information the same as a criminal - basically you get a clean slate.

But here in the UK you are tarred for life when if you Murdered someone, you would not have to tell a soul after 10 years. Clearly the Criminals have better rights the BR's that must be discrimatory.

Have you sent this query directly to Martin Lewis and asked his opinion? He fights for the rights of all other sorts of money issues want not the rights of us poor BR's just trying to have a life again after 6 years?
