A chance for all bankrupts to change your life - Your help needed!

It's a good suggestion Yamaha, problem is online petitions are treated as a joke and rarely get the results they ask for. Far better if we can paint a personal story, say what change we want, and make an impassioned case to individual politicians who can then make the case for change. Petitions don't do an awful lot to persuade politicians, personal stories do.0

I will be writing.:j
I completely agree with this. My comparison will also be the way in which bankrupts are treated against criminals. Eg, teh Jamie Bulger killers are released and given a whole new identity, so their identity is protected as a pair of murderers but as Bankrupts our information is there to be seen by everybody. Isnt it discrimination if you dont employ an ex convict? Suelet it is discrimination against bankrupts to be treated in this way?
One of the Jamie Bulger killers was relocated up here. Needless to say he was found out (not sure he was very bright) and was "forced" to move on.
Sorry not related to this thread at all  BUT i have written!!In for a penny in for a pound :j0 -
Discharged, trying to get back on my feet by becoming self-employed and looking for public liability insurance to cover my work as a wedding (and oft-times chi-hua-hua) photographer - hardly the riskiest business in the known universe. Trawled all of the advice to find the most recommended insurer in town, looked at their website:
quote "... We make the following assumptions regarding your policy: Neither you or your partner (or a business that you have owned previously) has been made bankrupt or insolvent..." unquote.
What the heck has that got to do with the price of insured shutter speeds???
The obvious assumption is that we are all of a criminal bent. It's like being forced to wear a suit with arrows on it every time I try to buy a service from somewhere/someone.
I've written. If every MP gets a letter or six then when one of them eventually stands on his or her hind legs and proposes a change to legislation there will be a vague and favourable memory of the subject in the back of the minds of the others.

I've sent Martin a PM to make him aware of this thread, let's up the ante now, lots of media people read these forums, this thread needs to get some serious attention and all of us have a responsibility to make sure this issue doesn't go away.
It's like you say FinancesOfAFiveYearOld, there is an assumption all bankrupts are bent. I'm not suggesting people who are involved with a bankrupt have no right to know at all, let's be real, people who are financially involved have a right to know up to a point. But let's have a cut-off point, if six years is good enough for those credit agencies, it should be good enough to be the law no-one can take the situation into consideration for anything beyond this time.0 -
Hey cityslicker, maybe you'll end up on the news!Look down your nose at me and I thumb my nose back at you.

There are known bankrupts. There are bankrupts we know are bankrupt. We also know there are unknown bankrupts, that is to say there are some people who are bankrupt we don't know about. But there are also unknown unknown bankrupts, the ones who they don't know they're bankrupt and neither do we. It is the latter category which makes the least sense out of any of this babble.
Anyway, enough of Donald, I'd be quite willing for media involvement, anything to stop the evil corps castigating bankrupts for life.0 -
This "online" form for a simple business insurance policy wants to know:
Been declared bankrupt?
More than once?
When? Last 5 years? Last 6-10? 11-15? Over 16 years?
If you answer "within last five years" a little box opens and says "Give details".
What details???
I entered my discharge date and clicked "go".
Another box opens to say, oops, aw shucks, we don't seem to be able to give you a quote online and would you believe it Mr Potential Customer Sir, one of our sales staff will have to call you...
Yeah. Right. I'm holding my breath and sitting by the phone.

That last question is what gets me. If you have been convicted of a criminal offence and it is spent you don't have to declare it but you still have to declare BR no matter how long ago. Doesn't seem fair or right.

I think that the reluctance to do anything about the Bankruptcy legistation is a mixture of `sweep it under the carpet` & `don`t want to open the floodgates` senario. The less the public `know` about it the better seems to be my experience.
Bankrupts really are the `lepers` of the twentyfirst century.
Harsh I know but reality is like that. Good luck to you CitySlicker....you have my support Hun.

Blind As A Bat, you're completely right that the issues I raise are only the tip of the iceberg. This is a massive issue, and I'm starting my battle by trying to change legislation that says after so long the bankruptcy cannot be taken into account for anything.
There will always be abuse of the register, but as bankrupts I think people have been too much in the mire to challenge the status quo. No-one I'm aware of so far has taken any steps to change legislation, yet here we are taking steps to change things. So far, according to the poll, 13 people have already done something or will be doing something to lobby a significant figure. I wrote to five MEP's, one MP, and six Lords. If all 13 people did the same, that's easily over 100 politicians who have been lobbied to date.
I don't expect overnight changes as this is the first time anyone has looked at this as a formal group, and taken constructive, orchestrated action, but I do expect us to become a group of people who become too loud to be ignored.0
