Why does everyone bring up this 'awful' Northern weather... is London currently basking in 35 degree sunshine?!

No its not but the south east is the warmest & driest park of the UK & thats a fact.
The south west has the mildrest winters.

That's all very well and good... but the difference between the weather down South and up North is not that huge. The whole of the UK has pretty rubbish weather.

    Google "Gulf stream".
Thats why it was so unusual last winter when it snowed in the south west.

I'm originally from Newcastle, great place, but no way would I ever move back up to the North, I don't care how much cheaper the property is. The winters are definitely colder and the summers/spring are definitely shorter.

True but it isn't the heat that I am pleased to get away from, it's the cold. In fact I can see us spending 4-6 months a year in Spain in a few years time.

If it wasn't for the longer drive (as we have a dog it only only works driving not flying) I would then consider moving back North, but we will probably move from Surrey to Devon (easy access to the Spain ferry from Plymouth). Can't wait to be winter free.
