There are some lovely places down south (except for London).
I have a daughter who married a southerner she's lived down on the south coast for years and she loves it.
What annoys me is the attitude which has been displayed on the board that Northerners are somehow inferior to the southerners.
It may not have been said but it comes across.
Having lived up in Newcastle for so long I can assure that that's not the case.
They are'nt all unemployed and football mad.
You get that wherever you go in any case.
Southeners are frequently portrayed as toffs who have more money than sense and enjoy living in a dirty city  Goes both ways you know
As for London - I've been to some far dirtier/more unsafe places in other UK cities than I have in London. 30 minutes on a train and you're in the countryside (proper countryside - farms, trees, views etc). Most people who whinge about London haven't actually ever spent any time here other than to see the sights.
But yes, property up north is much cheaper!0 -

Born & bred Londoner here, moved out about 5-6 years ago, would NEVER go back to live:eek:0 -
Having been brought up in Northumberland and having lived in Berkshire for 20 years. I can tell you that properties in really nice areas in the north east are not cheap by any means.
I was brought up and went to school in Tynemouth village - houses are as expensive as where we live in Berkshire.
Northumberland itself (apart from a few pit villages) is expensive - you just need to look at the likes of Hexham or Stannington or one of my favourites, Matfen.
We have been looking at prices for a while now and have been quite surprised at how expensive a nice house in a nice place is up there.
But I suppose it's the same every where - it's (to coin a phrase) location, location, location.0 -

Emmm....the computer for one. Charles Babbage was born in London

Perhaps you mean the first computer programmer came from the NW, Ada Lovelace? No...just checked and she was from London too. Had to be I suppose, as she encouraged Charles Babbage, above.

The WWW perhaps? No... sorry......Tim Berners-Lee is a Londoner too.

I would credit the inventors of long distance data transfer as the inventors of the internet not WWW.
But never stop a sotherner ramping their importance.:D
PS the first comuter is dated back to to 250 BC or 2600BC depending on your view
The earliest computer known is the Antikythera Machine, a mechanical device that computed the positions of the astrological signs on any given date, past or future. It was discovered in an ancient shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea and dates to approximately 250 BC. The designer/builder is not known, but because of its similarity to other mechanical devices known to have been designed by Archimedes, it is probably his work.
Still others will say the abacus is the first computer. They were invented by the Chinese between 2600 BC and 300 BC is considered as the first computer ever. Abacus was used by the merchants and Clerks in China.
The inventor of the modern computer as we know it. Or electronic computer it was.

I was talking about the www, not the internet. The WWW sits on top of the Internet. However, I'm glad you asked about data transfer:D I assume you are referring to TCP/IP?
If you look around on the internet for a video where Anthony Wedgwood Ben is talking about data transfer, you see that he states that he gave the americans the information as they were unable to work out how to send information over the internet. He says something like, the americans had joined all the computers, but didn't know how to send information over the network, so they asked Britain for this information as they knew we had worked out how to do it. A guy called Davis had invented packet switching and he worked at our National Pyshics Lab. I don't know what area of the UK Davis came from.
Ben said the reason he gave it was because the Americans were keen to win the cold war (having lost the real war) and they would throw more money at the Internet than the British wanted to do.RENTING?
