As we all know, there are no jobs up north. But I might move oop north when I retire and live in a 7 bed geogian mansion that costs the same as a 2 bed flat round here. Worth thinking about.0

Really? And you say this as someone from... Bristol, I presume?
I've just moved from one job to another. My OH started a new job about 3 months ago. My brother and sister, who have just graduated, have also just started jobs.
I was under the impression that the whole of the country was suffering from the economic climate - not just 'oop North'. Or are all your branches of Woolworths still open?0 -
Funny thread. Not sure about the rain comments as its rained here in Brighton for 3 years consistently, I suppose it is a bit warmer when it rains compared to Dundee. Come retirement I am selling the flat and buying a house in Scarborough so I supposed the op has a point.0

I lived in the north for over 20 years and most people seemed to be out of work. When I met someone new I was never asked 'what do you do?', it was always 'are you working?'. Fanatical devotion to football and excessive boozing was all there was to do. Some fab countryside though.
Local Woolworths has closed here, plus a handful of the less popular restaurants. Otherwise pretty much business as usual - I don't know anyone who has lost their job yet.0 -
Is it cheap to rent up there?0

What part of the North did you live in, and how long ago?
Maybe it is like this in places. But our cities are thriving, modern and exciting, our countryside (like you say) is outstanding and we're mostly friendly and welcoming! I hate to hear these awful stereotypes and I hate that 'London is the epicentre of the UK' attitude. Things happen up here too, you know!
I work in the media industry and when I graduated, so many southerners told me I'd have no chance of a job up here. Many of my uni friends moved to London but found the competition for jobs was so intense. Most are working in low paid, temporary jobs. I do understand that, eventually, many of them could earn more than me - but they'll pay more for everything else, too.
Rents in my area (popular Leeds suburb) aren't too bad - we pay £550 pm for our two bed, two bath modern, spacious flat!0 -
There is sense behind the OP, although IMHO the battle is largely between London and ... just about everywhere else, not merely the North.
I surely can not be the only one to pity those poor, grime-laden and green-deprived commuterland people who, by the million, pay though the nose for just about everything and think that the Holy Grail is - one day - maybe - to 'own' a suburban two-up two down surrounded by countless other lookalikes.
Not a hill, copse or stretch of coastline within hours of moronic, flatland travel. No remote possibility of kids 'going out to play'.
London is another country. What an existence.0 -

I love London - it's a great city. To visit. I could never live there! But I'm sure many Londoners are balking at the thought of living up here, too!0 -

I live about 30 miles south of London, so commuterland.
I live in a tiny village with country lanes (no pavements or street lighting) about 200 meters from my front door:D
A bridal path runs past my back garden.
Its not grime laden or green deprived:D
My DH works in London everyday. I work 7 miles away, near the M25:D0 -
A bridal path
Do grooms use it too? Or did you mean 'bridle'!I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0
