I think you will find there are 'better areas' reasonably close to both Plymouth and Torquay and that the 'best' areas lie between the two.
However, what would I know, as I'm from 'up north?' North Devon, that is!;)
We have a lot of exploring to do. The only time I have been to Devon (as an adult) was when my wife and I had a weeks holiday near Barnstaple. That was quite nice but I fancy we may end up in South Devon but who knows?Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

Our plan is to live in Devon (probably Torquay area) from about April to October and in the South of Spain from November to early April (as previously stated using the car ferry to Spain from Plymouth). Unless you know something (if so please share it with us) that is currently unknown to the rest of the world I would say this would be 'winter free'.
I don't know much about Devon, but I do not think Plymouth would be for me, I reckon Devon is quite cheap compared to Surrey so we would want to live in a much better area than Plymouth
Maybe I do know something unknown or maybe the rain clouds just follow me but it always rains whenever I go to Plymouth ! Sorry didn't meant to cause offence by not reading your post properly, sometimes read to fast for brain to keep up !
Would recommend anywhere in the South Hams as being a wonderful area. The house I fancy in Salcombe (beautiful but too many second homes for the village to have much atmosphere) has just come down in price to £2.5 million so if they will agree to a house swap I'll only have to find £2.4 million:eek:0 -

That's why I put words like 'best' in inverted commas. They may be very picturesque and desirable places, but with all the second homers and the constant streams of tourists in season, they wouldn't be my personal choice.
Despite the above, I know there are some lively communities in the area. My real objection is being required to pay about £100k+ extra just for the privilege of a South Hams address.0 -

No worries, 2.4M is way out of my league but then so are some houses that cost well over that here too.
But I have been very pleasantly suprised by the extremely nice looking houses available for under 500k around the Paignton area, they would cost at least half as much again in Dorking. When we know more about Devon we may very well refocus on another area but Paignton has a sandy beach which allows dogs on during the summer (probably about 7-8 am before it gets crowded in our case). Our ideal area would be walking (<10 mins) distance to a sandy beach (that allows dogs walked during the summer) but also have similar countryside access too, any ideas?Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

My favorite part of Britain I think. South Devon can't match North for beaches and other worldliness.
I'd hate to live in Spain with it's monotonous dusty spring - autumn climate. Plus it's scruffy like Cyprus.
So would I full time but I'm not going to live there, just escape there for 4 months or more during our winters so I can carry on ejoying tennis, bowls, long walks with my dog including plenty swimming for him. Whilst Spain IMO cannot come anywhere near matching the British countryside during those few winter months it will be much more pleasant for outdoor activitiesChuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

I love the area between Skipton and Harrogate and have owned a holiday home for many years in the area. The people are very friendly and you get great value for money, not like the rip off south coast. I have just had a week in Salcombe, Devon and all in (accomm, travel, meals out) it cost £1450 - not for me thank you.0
