Age for males to be spayed (kitten)

I've heard you can get male kittens done at around 5months, my vets are refusing to do it until he's over 6months, preferably 7 they said.
Am I right in thinking thats OTT? I'd rather have him done BEFORE he became sexually active, as I don't want smelly wee sprayed in places.
Plus I can just imagine he will bother my other cat more, when he's raring to go.
Obviously I wouldn't get him done if it wasn't a safe age, but he is pretty massive already, and is 17weeks old, so I know that's too early, but it was just so I could maybe phone around as my vets are weird....(When I got my female neutered they said she had to be out of season for 3months before they'd do it.....she didn't go 2weeks!)
Also they are quoting £40, is that resonable? They charged me £68 for my female I think it was.
Thanks!

I think males tend to mature a bit more slowly than females, hence the later neutering. Breeders say the males need a bit more time to "bulk up" and I'm sure I've read somewhere that that applies to bone and muscle density rather than actual size.
I've had 2 males neutered at 6 months and they hadn't bothered my (spayed) females or sprayed before the op. But I have occasionally heard of neutered toms spraying as it is a territorial thing."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
Mine were done at 6 months - there was never any question that doing them earlier was an option.
I sort of wish I'd left them a bit longer - they're very dainty little boys and I don't think they're going to get any bigger now, bless em.My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
had mine done at 6 months...his sister was done at the same time and i can recall that there was no hanky-panky activity between them, so you should be OK to wait a while. they do bulk out more the longer you leave it. i suspect my adopted cat was a stud once (or was unneutered for a while), he has a broader face and is stockier than the male cat i previously mentioned.0

Okay thanks! Just didn't want him to start spraying his stinky stuff in corners! I'll wait until he's 6months then. He's quite a big kitten for his age, he's the same length as my female cat who is 2 (and didnt get neutered until 1) but obviously a slim wee thing with a tiny head.

He has big thumper legs.
I'm just posting this picture because it's funny, he's like a merman.

I'm having my boy done next week on his 5 month birthday, the vets have said as long as his bits have dropped into place that he can be done. I have to get him done early as I have a girl the same age, she is being speyed at the same time.
My local vets is a companion care and they charge £39 for boys to be neutered and £52 for a spey.Well I can't stand by the side
And watch this life pass me by
Just want to be...Happy0 -
he looks quite the character!

If my climbing my walls, curtains and table, eating ANY food (I actually give him veg peelings to eat) plucking me to death and what can only be described as suckling me? Character, then yes he has bundles of it Hehehe.
Total lap cat, I've always thought boys were more affectionate. My female one looks affronted at the thought of being on someones lap.0 -
Aww you have my sympathy I was climbing the walls while I waited for my kitten to be done- he was so hyper. In the end he was done at 5 and a half months as he was trying to mate with the other kitten (who was male!) and wouldn't leave him alone. He even tried it on with the bigger cats (also male) but they weren't as accomdating :rotfl: He never sprayed once though.
I think it depends on your vet, the other kitten was already done when he came to us and he was only 5 months old.0 -
both my girl and boy were done at 5 months... certainly didn't hamper the boys growth! Or if it did... good job he was done when he was! LOL He's nearly twice the size of his littermate sister who's a normal size

if his weight is high enough and his bits have dropped I see no reason he can't be done

How does one tell if the cats "bits" have dropped? Lol, not sure what to look for exactly, do they droop or something
