I too have had the email & don't know what to do:
Your Fixed Price Energy Offer ends on 31st August 2009 and because you're an important customer to us, we want to let you know what happens next.
If you're happy to cap your prices for the next 12 months, you don't need to do a thing. On 1st September 2009, we'll automatically move you to a great new deal called Capped Price Energy September 2010.*
With this deal you'll have peace of mind knowing that over the next 12 months your prices could go down, but they definitely won’t go above the capped rates.
There may be a cancellation charge if you decide to end the new deal early.** But, if you stick with it, you’ll have the reassurance that your prices will not rise above the capped rates until after 31st August 2010 – whatever happens to the market.

Option to opt out
If you don't want to protect your prices and would prefer to move to our standard monthly Direct Debit prices please tell us before 30th September 2009.
Standard monthly Direct Debit prices are currently the same rates as Capped Price Energy September 2010 prices and could go up as well as down.0 -
I too have had the email & don't know what to do:
Ditto. As we have until 30th September to opt out of the new capped price deal, I am wondering whether it will be best to wait and see what is available during the first week of September, and decide then what way to jump.
I feel as though maybe between now and the end of September things may become clearer, as who knows what deal may crop up after the current fixed rate ends.A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion0 -
I too am on the SP Dual Fuel Fixed Price Energy Online 2009 and have been sent their 'amazing' new Capped Offer which I am unsure about. As it isn't on any comparison sites it's a little hard to know what to do.
In the mean time I've been using the various said comparison sites to check which tariff would be best for us but keep getting wildly varying results on each site. I have been inputting our total annual kwh usage for both gas and electricity to give accurate results but am no closer to knowing what to do. We work from home so our usage is fairly consistent from one year to the next.
Is anyone else having the same problem? Or does anyone have any tips for what to do? I feel like I'm racing against some ticking time bomb!0 -
We're on Scottish Power's Fixed Price Energy Online, which finishes 31st August 2009. According to comparison websites we'd be better off switching then. However I've been in e-mail correspondance with Scottish Power, and if I switch before 31st August I'll get a £50 penalty for changing. However, if I don't switch then, they'll put us on their Capped Price Energy 2010. If we switch within the first 7 days of this, there is no charge, but if we go over the 7 day deadline, we're charged £50 cancellation fee.
How the heck are we supposed to time a switch to another company to take place in that 7 day window??? Impossible!
So now I'm trying to see if they have any tarif that we can switch to with them during that period, and then switch on elsewhere with no cancellation. What hassle though!0 -
Oh, forgot to say in my last post that Scottish Power advised...
Capped Price Energy September 2010.
The prices are as follows:
Electricity
Daily Service Charge = 12.88pence
All/Day kWh = 10.575pence
Gas
Daily Service Charge = 4.335pence
All kWh = 3.406pence
Hope that helps someone!0 -

I am on the same tariff. The email they sent me last Friday says:
"If you don't want to protect your prices and would prefer to move to our standard monthly Direct Debit prices please tell us before 30th September 2009.
Standard monthly Direct Debit prices are currently the same rates as Capped Price Energy September 2010 prices and could go up as well as down."
so I read it that you can let them switch you by default, but you have 30 days to find a better tariff and let them know this without penalty. Who was it that said you only had 7 days?A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion0 -
I read it that you just had to click the link on the email if you didn't want to start another year contract on the capped tariff. Then when the current offer expires you get put on the standard tariff where you are free to leave at any time.
I'm going to opt for the standard rate and on 1st September start the transfer process.Steve0 -
Just been checking whether I could save, but trying to find a phone number on the Scottish Power website but they really don't want anybody calling them - absolutely impossible to find one. I guess I'll have to go home and look at some of the letters I was sent when I started with them (everything has been paper-free since)
Hope it will help someone.0 -
