Rail Travel: Tips on Cheap Tickets

Depends what you mean by 'decent' and whether your expectations are realistic
Is she eligible for a railcard? That will knock a third off the walkon return fare of £110+
Advance tickets may be available - I spotted one at £39.50 single but didn't trawl though all your date range but that suggests it could come down to under £80 if you are flexible enough. The theoretical minimum fare is £16 each way but availability will be near nil
Would like to be able to get a return fair for her for around £60, I could stretch to a young persons railcard for her if there was a significant discount though.0 -

That £39.50 advance will come down to around £26 with a railcard - so potentially around £52 return if you can find it both ways.
And the railcard will be valid for a year so scope for future trips.0 -
thanks for your help, could you tell me what website you found it on?

Just discovered an anomaly between National Rail Enquireis and London Midland cheap tickets. NRE offered an excellent price for a group of 4 adults on Off Peak Group Saver returns between London and Birmingham, but once on the LM site to purchase, only tickets at 4 times the price were showing.
On enquiring, I was told to tick the London Midland Trains Only boxes in the left hand column. This reduced it to double the price shown on NRE. I was then informed that Group Saver tickets are currently only available from ticket offices, but that you will get the price advertised on NRE when buying in person on the day.
These Group Saver tickets will apparently be available online soon.0 -

Already available via some sites powered by the tra1nl1ne e.g. South West Trains, First Great Western.
WebTIS sites e.g. Southern, LM available soon as you say.0 -
Hi
I need to get to Manchester from Yeovil Somerset on Thursday afternoon and I believe there is a club 55 ticket I can get for £18 return, however this is from Welsh stations only. Would it be an cheaper to go from Yeovil to say Cardiff and go to Manchester from there?0 -
You can get a club55 ticket all the way for £50 - changing at Newport and using ATW to Manchester
To split as you suggest would cost more - £20 for an FGW club55 to Newport and £35 for an ATW club 55 to Manchester. The £18 is a 'from' fare - I assume from stations nearer Manchester.0 -

No, get a Return ticket from Yeovil Pen Mill to Castle Cary and then get a Club 55 Ticket to Manchester £18 with a £5 First Great Western Add on.
Details and T&C's here and the Club 55 Network is here. If you buying this ticket from Yeovil Pen Mill I would go the day before at a quiet time, as I doubt the ticket office seller would have heard of this ticket and might have to look it up or phone for advise.Whoa!
