I normally use the East Coast website to book my tickets because they give good web discounts and have the full day's schedule listed but can anyone advise why there's always a price listed for tickets that I never seem to be able to get? I've signed up to various Alerts for advanced ticket releases but these are still double the price of the (theoretical) lowest ticket.

I've booked an outward ticket from Edinburgh to Newton Abbot for Christmas and am now waiting for the advanced tickets to be released before getting a return. Checking on First Scot Rail there seem to be a variety of ticket prices from £30 but the cheapest I ever seem able to find is £62.50, even though I check straight away after the advanced tickets are released.

Virgin West Coast run the slower (cheaper) service so I tried to speak to one of their advisors to get an answer but they're giving really vague answers.

The quota is probably set to zero.

£62.50 is not that bad a price for that journey

Virgin are slightly behind the others in releasing tickets but I'm not sure they ever actually offer any for that route. TBH I wouldn't expect their advisors to be too clued up on that.

An Anytime Return via London is £298.

    What have you found Foggster?

Or do you want someone else to do all the work for you?

Blooming heck wealdroam - no need to get antsy. I was only asking!!! I thought, looking through the other 100s of posts on this thread, that this was where such questions were asked and answered.

I have indeed spent a while looking at split ticketing sites and also using Trainline and National Rail Enquries. Have sorted it now but was in a situation late last night trying to help a friend out and I said "oh hang on, nice people on MSE might be able to help". :rotfl:

Have to agree with you Foggster.

it was a bit out of order with the way wealdroam put that post.

After all you was only asking for help but some people on this site are like that.

Assuming you are asking for the cheapest and don't mind if it's a bit slow, then you could consider a Super Off Peak Return routed London Midland Only to London (£25.50) and then an Off Peak Return from there? I think it may take too long though, but I don't know how much time you're prepared to sacrifice for speed.
