I just thought they had to release 'so many' advance tickets for each day.
On the East Coast website you can get an email alert when tickets are released.
On the right hand side of their homepage it says...BOOK NOW FOR TRAVEL Tickets are now available for travel up to and including Friday 18 February 2011 with the exception of 12 and 13 February.

Hi I know this is short notice so will have missed out on most advanced deals but I'm travelling from Manchester to Euston 10:00 returning same day around 19:00. EDIT: forgot date Sat 11 December
The cheapest fare I can find is £66 return with Virgin, are there any other offers anybody knows of on at this time?0 -

You could try this, but it takes just about double the time of a direct Virgin train.
Manchester Pic to Crewe Off Peak Day Return £11 (can be done for £8.60 by using Virgin trains only)
Crewe to London Euston Super Off Peak Return *London Midland Trains Only* £22.50
So total Return: £33.50 or if you can manage the cheaper option £31.10
Only one problem, last Super Off Peak London Midland train out of London Euston is the 18:46, info from East coast Website

How do you get £72 when the standard off peak single fare is £70????? Anyway:
Several possibilities:
off peak walk on single Folkestone Central to Waterloo East - £26.30
advance single Waterloo to Dorchester South - £23 on most trains
Or if he doesn't want to commit to a particular train a superoffpeak single from Paddington to Dorchester West is £32
Edit - there's a superoffpeak day single from Folkestone to London at £18.50. You have to specify Charing Cross to find it.0 -

Cheapest appears to be an Off Peak Return with railcard via Banbury at £74.50.
Reading will be difficult at that time.
Bus replacements whichever way you go from there.
In your case, bus to Didcot.
Because you want an Open Return, I have not looked at Advance Singles.0 -

Damn, I'd rather pay extra than go on a bus. Is there a non london ticket without buses? (Sorry, I don't eally understand route closures etc)0
