An Off Peak Return is £87.30.

    How about this...

I've assumed return travel on following Sunday...

Dep Lockerbie 18:33, arr Leicester 23:20. Advance Single = £20.50.
Dep Leicester 17:49, arr Lockerbie 22:22. Advance Single = £10.50.

    Total = £31.00.

    Info from East Coast Trains.

Hello I'm also new to the forum but regularly read advice on cutting the cost of rail travel.

I'm visiting a friend next month in Scarborough (travelling from Luton/Leagrave). 1 adult no cards.

I wanted to book early to get the cheapest fare which is £35.00 each way. The only concern I have is that I have to travel into London to get a train out to York. This annoys me as when I visited my family in Wakefield I travelled direct from Luton via Sheffield.

Having looked at split tickets from Luton to Sheffield, Sheffield to York, then York to Scarborough I save £5.50. However there is only a 11min break between one of the trains and I scared of missing it if the train is delayed.

What is your advice? Do I risk the delay to get the route I want at a smaller cost?
  • Hi guys, if one of you could work your magic on a journey i would like to make that would be great. I have tried myself, but had no luck in getting it down below £88 return.

I'd be wary of the 11 minute transfer.

A possibility, though not particularly cheap is the Saturdays only through train from Luton to Scarborough (0659 ex Luton). Coming back it's 1703 from Scarborough, but doesn't stop at Luton - you have to change at Leicester and Wellingborough

    £83.30 walk on return.

You could also investigate getting the bus to Stevenage and see what rail offers you can get from there.
  • Hi peoples.
Just after a bit of clarification.
I am travellng from brighton* to London, I am taking the children to the science and history museums so need to get to south kensington tube.
I was looking at either single advance non refundable tickets, from Brighton* to London Victoria and reverse, 1 adult : £7.50 then at the station I can get the eldest boy a ticket for £1, then I'm assuming it's free for the baby?
Or £11.90 for a return which means I can choose what time trains I get.

Then I need to get from there to south Kenstington station, which I beleive to be in Zone 1, just looked and a day ticket is £4, is this the cheapest way to get there?

*it's technically not Brighton but I dont want to divulge the exact location on here.

How much travelling will you be doing on the Tube and buses? If you're doing more than one journey a Day Travelcard (at £5.60 for Z12) will be cheaper than singles. If you head to London a lot an Oyster card may be worthwhile- a Tube Z12 cash single is £4 but Oyster is £1.80 and it price caps at the same price as a Day Travelcard.

If you buy a day travelcard as part of your train ticket (so the destination is London Travelcard rather than London Terminals) it can sometimes be cheaper than buying the Travelcard separately. London Travelcard is available as a destination from many parts of the south east, ask at the station.

I'd suggest that you spend the extra couple of quid and buy tickets that you can use on any train, it means that if your kids get overheated you can come home early. AFAIK the cheapest AP tickets Brighton-Victoria are £5 each way (cheaper with railcard discount), although as Southern use banding if you live in somewhere like Haywards Heath they will be cheaper.
