You could get further saving by getting advance single from Newcastle to Edinburgh
    As Livingthedream says...

Advance Singles from Newcastle to Edinburgh are available for £52.50 each way. I.e. £105.00.

Add on LTD's £42.20, then total for three adults = £147.20.

Thanx for that Keith, not bad a £110 pound saving, never used the 'Friends fare' ticket before but apparently there very similar to Advance tickets, ie; you must travel on the booked train speficied on your ticket, so would advise the OP to make sure that they leave plenty of time to make their connections at Edinburgh.

Taking my daughter to visit Southampton University on 9th Septembter. At present we are planning on driving down from Warrington (near Manchester/Liverpool) on the Wednesday night and getting a travelodge then driving all the way home on the Thursday night. Expected cost about £90.

Anybody help me find a train way of doing it within a day. We can leave NW from say 7am onwards and dont need to be back until late. Thanks

With those time constraints the best I could do is £104.20 return for both of you.

Warrington Bank Quay to Runcorn East 07.23 9th Anytime single £4.20 ** stay on this train as its the same train below that goes to Chester **
Runcorn East to Southampton Central 07.30 arr 13.41 9th Advance single £56 via Newport S.Wales

Southampton Central to Warrington Bank Quay 19.15 arr 23.12 advance single £44 via Crewe

Info from the East Coast website and you need to tick 'one way' and do two different searches using the 'more options' and via 'Newport S.Wales' for the outward single and 'Crewe' for the return single.

WOW thanks, great info. Its about £60 cheper than I could get it going via wolverhampton. Just got to work out now if 5 hours will be enough (about 2 hours less than my route)
  • Hi, I am travelling from Manchester to London on Sunday 01/08/10. I need to get to London approx 12:00pm and will be returning at around 7:00pm. I have looked on the Virgin Trains site and can get the tickets (Manchester Picadilly to London Euston plus return) for £85 total (for 2 adults with 1 x 16-25 railcard). Is there a cheaper option anywhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated ;).

Megabus... £15 out, £18 back. Total return for two = £33.50.

It'll be 3am when you get back to Manchester if you use that method.

The other option is to type "Chesterfield" in to the 'via' box on a train fare site. You'll have to change at Sheffield on the booked train and it'll take longer. It'll be £22 each way for the person without the railcard and 13.20 for the person with the railcard making the total £70.40

    Outward:
    07:45 Manchester Piccadilly [MAN]
    Sheffield [SHF] 09:06

    09:17 Sheffield [SHF]
    London St Pancras Domestic [STP]12:20

    £22.00 Advance

    Return:
18:30 London St Pancras Domestic [STP]
    Sheffield [SHF] 21:39

    22:17 Sheffield [SHF]
    Manchester Piccadilly [MAN] 23:29

    £22.00 Advance

Quick hint, you will most likely need to get a cab from any of the Southampton stations (the uni is walkable from any of them IF you know where you are going, but can take 40 mins or from Central) you will find the cab fare is cheapest from Swaything (although you may have to call to book one)
