If you are flexible on times it should be possible to do it a bit cheaper - I can see £175 ish. That's to Paddington with the Underground to Waterloo included.

Splitting at Exeter and travelling to Waterloo via Honiton might be cheaper, but would be slower.

And megatrain between Waterloo and Exeter might be cheaper -but they haven't released tickets yet and by the time they do the direct route will be a lot more expensive if megatrain isn't suitable

A fully flexible Off Peak Return is only £140.70 if you avoid london.

But on those dates it can be done for £96.50 using Advance Singles.
You have to travel on the booked trains though.

    Info from Southern Railway.

Btw... do not book with the trainline. Avoid their fees.

Does anyone know why the cheaper tickets haven't gone up yet for 30th August, the Bank Holiday Monday?

I need to book a ticket coming back from Edinburgh to London. I have already booked my East Coast train's £5 ticket offer going up there on the Wednesday though. Thanks.

They do a lot of track maintenance over holiday weekends (so as not to disrupt commuters too much) so it probably takes them longer to sort out what services will be running. It's still 11 weeks away so there's plenty of time. They usually reckon 10-12 weeks ahead.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

  • Sometime ago, whoever it is who now runs the Stansted Express rail service between Stansted Airport decided to do away with Off-Peak fares so that the cheapest way of getting into London rocketed from £15.30 to £27.90.

Off-peak fares from nearby stations like Bishops Stortford to LIverpool Street are still available for £13.00 return. As the cheapest fare from Stansted Airport to Bishops Stortford is £4.50, the cheapest way of getting into London from the Airport is to buy a Stansted Airport to Bishops Stortord return, get off at Bishops Stortford and buy your ticket into London. There are so many trains going through Bishops Stortford (it is also on the Cambridge line), that this will probably only add about 15 or 20 minutes to your journey but you will have saved over £10. Coming back, there is no difference in journey time as you are ticketed for the whole journey.

The train company may consider fleecing visitors to this Sceptred Isle (which is probably the majority of their "customers") acceptable but ripping off the indigenous population clearly is not. If enough people do what I do, the company might rethink this iniquitous policy and price journeys roughly proportionate to the distance travelled rather than what the customers will inadvertently bear.

You should be able to buy both tickets at Stansted Airport.

Ticket offices are obliged to sell you the tickets you ask for.

Note that the train both ways must stop at Bishops Stortford - not all do.
