Edit: Sorry, posted before finishing the thread -I see that others have already made this point -even though it is so blindingly obvious no-one really needed to.
Besides anyone who saw Econ Gastron saw that this womens kids were all able to get to school by themselves? We used to. I cannot understand the pampering. IN my day it was unheard of to take taxis to school. Even the special school up the road used buses and coaches.we used to go to the nearest one and walk. Why can't people do that now? What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
Whats wrong with dropping your kids off earlier and getting there at 9? I have worked with a lot of women with kids and thats what they used to do. As for the end of the day if they couldn't pick them up after school finishes they would work through lunch and leave at 4.

And as for leaving at 4pm.... not all employers allow you to work through lunch to leave early (in fact, I'd go so far as to say the majority won't as the business needs won't allow it), and what do the children do between 3:15pm (2:30pm for our secondary schools) and Mum getting home??Cheryl0 -
We wouldn't be allowed to work though lunch, because firstly, if everyone wanted to it would cause an issue, and you can't let one, but not the other.
Secondly people who "work through lunch" generally don't really; they still stop and eat even if it's at their desk which is also frowned upon as it's " An office not a cafe" ..."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." Zippychick re your post 1572, yes you did misunderstand my attitude, I was just suggesting the people on the programme looked bored with the process and if it was a necessary experiment I think I would be glad of the help. I know most of us on here have to pennypinch and are very good at it but we mostly do get a kick out of it. Sorry not been around since you posted. Will remember to put a smiley when Im trying to be funny, so Im not giving the wrong impression hunny.Clearing the junk to travel light

There's no way I'd leave a child (especially of infant school age) in the playground without an adult being responsible for them.....
And a lot of schools won't allow you to do so. I've not read all of this thread so not sure what this has to do with cooking, but surely it's up to parents to decide what they're comfortable doing?0 -

Who gets taxis to school and what business is it of anyone's if the woman on the programme chooses not to work?

Not quite sure what you're talking about with the reference to taxis but I certailnly wouldn't leave my child at school before it opens .
I think you're missing the point that a lot of women treat being at home as their job. They are there for their children before and after school and are available to look after them when they are ill. Some women are lucky enough to be married to a high earner so they don't have to economise to be a SAHM. Others may have to tighten their belts to do so. If the woman in the programme could cut £150 a week off her shopping bill then why not do that and be able to remain a SAHM??? Your implication is that she isn't supporting her husband while he launches his business.
My husband runs his own business and I stay at home. The only way in which I help him with the business is to do a bit of admin for him but otherwise I just work damn hard to ensure that outside of the business he has no pressure. By running the house well and organising him and the children I save us money and keep stress levels down. I'm lucky to be able to do this as he earns enough but he is also lucky to be able to concentrate fully on his business and earn more becuase I take care of everything else and we have tight months like most when my ability to economise is invaluable.
I should add the caveat that I have no problem with women who work outside the home (why would I?) and I also realise that some men choose to stay at home with children while their wives work.

I don't want to throw away loads (we are too greedy for that:o:o:o), but its a nice non-smelly hygienic way of dealing with the scrapings off your plate & the little waste we do have.
What scrapings? Eat it all up!
It is a pain having to trek down to the compost heap in the rain, but we used to have a special box in the kitchen where we'd gather up all the scraps from the days cooking so we only had to go out to the compost once. it had a really tight sealing lid so no problems with flies or anythingAugust grocery challenge: £50
Spent so far: £37.40 :A0 -
I have a tiny garden in inner London and have had a wormery for about 4 years now. It has been great other than one summer when for some reason it bred MASSES of the flies and they really did all come into the house. But I just stopped putting food in till the weather cooled down and it righted itself again.
My parents have successfully used a green cone for 7-8 years - they waste very little but do use it for the odd chicken bone, bit of fat, etc as well as all the veg waste. They actually don't get any compost from it as it's so efficient now. I guess the local worms all know what time to pop along for a feed.
I must admit there is a bit of a judgemental tone creeping in on the thread which is a shame. We all do our own thing. Praps it's collective grumpiness from the stage we're at in the loooooooooooong school holidays.0 -
Could we maybe (anyone who is a good/decent thrifty cook) start up our very own MSE economy gastronomy thread. Something a bit different than our usual mince with oats and carrots/rubber chicken (and yes I do both!), but cheap, cost effective (not 5 hours in the oven type of thing) and tasty, but MSE style.
I know that we have the recipe collection, and we also have weezl's 50p thread, but there must be some middle ground. Some minimum cost, maximum taste yummy recipes with costings too so we can work out if we can afford to put them in our meal plans? Go on, somebody, anybody?
Yes would be good, I need inspiration!Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0
