Mcdonalds

Hi all, my ds 16 has a job interview at mcdonalds tomorrow for a few hours a week. Could anyone give me any pointers so he will stand out and hopefully get the job. He has experience of working for me and his dad and he also has a summer gardening job at the moment for a very well known public figure. What sort of things should he ask and should he go in his suit or do you think that would be a bit over the top. Any advice much appreciated, thanks x

Thanks Dave, Yes i thought a suit myself as hopefully the other people going will wear trainers lol.
  • They will be looking for reliability, punctuality, enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and ability to take instructions. I'm sure you can find something to evidence all these points from his previous work experience.

Definitely a suit and pay attention to personal grooming...he will be in a food handling role so turning up clean and well presented is a must.

Could you do a mock interview tonight (with both of you in appropriate interview clothing to get him used to that) and go through the basics? I've seen teenagers apply for jobs where they can barely string a sentence together, if he comes across as articulate that will be a huge bonus these days.

    Good luck!

Thanks aircooled and paul for the replies,he is really desperate for the job as he is saving for a car when he is seventeen so hopefully this will come across as him being eager to learn ect. The mock interview is a really good idea as i am good at throwing unexpected questions so we will do that tonight. I will make sure he is scrubbed up well, do you think he should say he is a team player and enjoys working with the public? Also what does he say if asked why he wants the job, thanks a lot everyone for your time. x
  • I've just read a post on another 'interview tips' type thread, and someone involved in recruiting suggested phoning the contact, and having a chat, or maybe asking if you can go and look round and see what the job entails, meet people etc..and that way you are the one they remember at the interview.

He should ask what duties will be expected of him and hours of work, also if possible ask to be shown round as Floozie suggests, he could also ask if extra hours will be available for him as he gets used to the work.

As for his attire, smart and clean are advised particularly his hands and his hair.

    Good luck.

I must state that I have never interviewed for McDonald's so ignore my advice if someone who has can help, however I have done plenty of work in catering and retail.

Generally interviews in these places are fairly quick and they won't ask anything complex or want to know their 5 year career plan if you know what I mean :) In some ways that is actually a disadvantage as it means you need to be confident and articulate to stand out from the rest...that's why I suggest a simple mock interview but doing it several times so he can give a brief but polished performance.

If they ask him what he is saving for then the car is a good one...it shows he has a specific goal he is working towards.

The main point to get across (as long as it applies!) is that he is willing to work weekends, evenings, bank holidays, work at short notice, rarely ill and hasn't got loads of holidays booked. It really is frustrating for employers when they hire teenagers only to find that the have so many family holidays and activities booked they are never available (I've known more than one "Saturday lad" who ended up never being free to work Saturdays).
