We've been growing our own sprouting potatos for a few years now and had no problems. Dustbins would be ideal for them

does that mean you can grow potataoes from old potatoes they dont have to be actual seed ones? i found one sprouting under in a cupboard yesterday. no idea how long its been there dispite cleaning it out (gross i know) but wondered wether or not that would produce new spuds when i saw it.
back to comping in 2017, fingers crossed

Yes, it does mean you can grow them from old potatoes which are sprouting. So, there's no reason that yours shouldn't do, give it a try and see how you go.

    Good luck.

Hi all, just read through the whole thread :o

OH isn't keen on plants etc indoors and isn't too bothered outdoors either, but I have finally managed to get him to come round to the idea of growing rocket and spinach (as he eats lots of them), when the garden is done and a raised bed is built (so not yet).

So I went out at the weekend and bought two 6inch (I think) diameter pots and sowed rocket and perpetual spinach in them and put them on the indoor window ledge.

I already have some small sprouts of spinach (think there were about 4 seeds in the pot in total). But the rocket, I was a bit over eager with and it looks like a whole field of cress!!

How much room do the plants need? (the packet says grow in rows )

Will the spinach be ok about 4 plants in the pot or are they likely to need to be split?

Same with the rocket - how many plants would you suggest to have in that size pot?

If I have to end up with 30 pots of plants/salad in the kitchen - OH won't be best pleased - though I can give some away. Can't plant them outside - where we live any plant pots etc left outside would "disappear" ;)

And... if they do "go to seed" does that mean I can keep the seeds and plant them in a few months when we've eaten the rocket/spinach?

Sorry for lots of questions but the only plants I've ever kept alive have been christmas cacti and spider plants :rotfl:

And just one more thing... what else can I grow in that size pot? I'm getting a bit too enthusiastic over this now :D

Can I do peppers? Are they small ones instead of supermarket size ones - or does that depend how long you leave it for?

What about cherry tomatoes? Do they all grow really tall?

i would say that 6" pots would be a little too small once the plants start to grow - start the seeds off and then pot the plants on as they get bigger.

Tomato plants can grow a metre tall! My outside plants are not as big this year but my greenhouse plants are huge! Yes peppers can be grown in pots - they need a sunny windowsill or sunny sheltered spot in the garden and then as the weather cools down they could do with being brought inside.

I should think the rocket will be okay at four per pot (6 inch) but I think two max for the spinach. How about getting a long planter or two? You can buy a size that's right for your window sill/s. Hubby will just have to lump it, sez I, if he's happy to eat the fruits of your labour. :D

Oh yes, as long as they are 'open pollinated' plants (pollinated by bees and other insects). Have a look at the Real Seed Company's website for more information on that.
