mine didn't work in pots last year. they like firm soil and something solid to get their roots in.

i would think a grow bag can be compacted around th roots but if the pos are only tempoary anyway the should be no problem, as they're not going to be there for long.

  • ive been growing pumpkins for years and while no growing them in pots wont produce as good a plant as growing in the grown it is possible, just give lots of feed such as tomato feed.

the vines can be nipped off after a couple of flowers to keep the plant short, in fact some people find this preferable as limiting the vine to one or two fruits will result in much bigger pumpkins than allowing lots of fruit.

lastly as far as space is concerned if you intend to keep the plant short it is possible to grow the plant up an obelisk in the same way as you would grow runner beans all you need to remember is the pumpkins need lots of support!....ive done this many times tying the plant to the obelik as it grows and supporting the pumkins with those cheap little toy hammocks everyone used to have for cuddly toys...i got mine from a local pound shop!

i have had some good results using the above methods and while you wont get award winning pumpkins you will get them big enough for kids to carve!!

    hope this helps

I'm no expert by far, but I planted my strawberries in tubs and they just keep growing and growing, so maybe you don't need any special planters. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will let you know!

I have put some cherry tomato plants in wall baskets. One has been eaten by the slugs )grr!) but I'm wondering how to keep them watered well enough without losing all of the water all the time?

You are just going to have to keep watering them religiously. Next year get a reservoir to put in the wall brackets, or change the wall brackets to ones with a reservoir in them.

Would it be plausible (although ugly) to get a bottle and drill holes in the bottom, stand it in the basket and then just fill it up with water so that the water just soaks into the compost?
    Yes

I figure that if I use a 1L or 500ml bottle then it would be more hidden but how much water should I be aiming for or do I just need to stick my hand in the soil to see if it's wet enough?
    Yes

If your wall brackets have drainage holes in them the water will run out when there is too much in them.

I planted my Aldi fruit trees in big pots and put 4 beetroots around the peach tree- they seem to be doing quite well at the moment. I have also put beetroots and lettuces out the front mixed in with violas and pansies. I stuck some garlic cloves out there yesterday as they were sprouting in the fridge. I'm hoping the cats won't like the smell of them. Is there anything I could plant now to keep the slugs away or do I really need to go for slug repellant pellets or such like?
Humans are apparently the only mammals who like garlic. Slugs and snails don't like garlic either. You can gave your flowers a garlic wash which may be enough to deter the slugs and snails from the lettuces.

Also I have got lots of seeds still such as melons, kiwis, strawberries, beans, bettroots, radishes, lettuces, tomatoes. Is it too late to sow seeds or will I just get a later crop?

I only have one windowsill that I can use really so space is limited. Is there anything I can shove straight into the ground or pots of compost?
Yes. You need to investigate this yourself though either read the back of the seed packet or google for information on growing that particular crop.

Would a smashed up growbag provide a good compost for starting off seedlings?
Some seeds are happy to grow in compost others grow better in seed compost. I find it's trial and error.

A lot of your questions have been answered before. If you do a search on this forum for every question you have, for example "slugs snails" you will get threads with the answers to your questions.

I've got some sturdy type seed trays and gather I can grow cut and come again type salad leaves in them (that will save on compost!). So - thinking of having a couple of them on my kitchen windowsill and "bob's your uncle". One daft question time - they have drainage holes in the bottom and I dont want compost falling through those holes onto my windowsill.

I am thinking that drainage in those circumstances isnt going to be that necessary - as the soil is going to dry out at a rate of knots anyway sitting there basking in the sunlight - so thought I could just use something (a cut-up plastic bag - I know, I know - I didnt get it - some ****** sold me something in it and I couldnt stop them!) and put my compost on top of that. That would certainly stop said compost leaking through - would that be okay?

I put plastic bags under seed trays if I have them on the windowsill and then place them on thickly cut cardboard.

Im Going to do the potatoes in a Grow Bag as mentioned in this forum. What Potatoes do I need i.e. Early, Lates etc? And when should I expect my 1st batch to be ready?

I've got carott seeds - can these be planted straight into a Deep Pot? How Deep Should it be??

    Thanks

Great thread. I shall be following with interest, as this is exactly the advice I need too.

    Thanks Mrs C.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.
