Sick wife, flu, sick daughter, totm and cold, tired son, school play.
Me just getting on with it, suffering my usual problems, but don't feel bad in myself, is that good or bad?
Went out last night, told various people I didn't miss drink, actually trueCouple had a bit of an arguement, apparently she reckons he drinks to much, he reckons he goes days without, but couldn;t remember when

This thread is so long and you all seem to know each other so well that I'm not sure how to write this request for advice. It's my first post on a forum too, so I apologise if I'm not doing things right.
I've two questions to ask, but first I'll just say that I stopped drinking on 7 December 2006. I go to AA meetings locally and have read some of the big book.
My questions are:
1. Can anyone recommend literature that make sense of the twelve steps? I just don't know what the 12 steps mean and I don't know how to even start. I'd like a bit of a clue before trying to find a sponsor.
At AA meetings I keep hearing the 'you must get on your knees daily and pray'. I've only recently started this, but I don't have faith and feel uncomforable. I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to just continue, or whether there's something I need to be doing to help a faith to begin. That's the sort of thing I mean.
2. I need a break and was thinking of going on a retreat (I'll take any books you recommend above!) Has anyone done anything like this and be willing to pass on any suggestions or advice?
Many thanks

Welcome Hiphouse, unfortunately for you I don't do AA, the bloke you really want is lewt, there are others, but not around as much as him.
I don't think they literally mean down on your knees, or do they?
Anyway hope you get the answers here, stick around, there are regulars and not so regulars and also an awful lot of friends who just keep a watchful eye.
So, feel free to keep posting, why not lets us know a bit about you and how you got here.
Cheers

You've taken the hardest step already!
Don't worry about the steps too much at the moment - just look at step 1. Also don't worry about a faith and a Higher Power - these things will come to you in time.
Stay close to your meetings for now and keep in touch with other AAs.
You will get lots of help and support on here too - keep coming back
Take care x:jThat's life, it's just the way it is0 -
Cheers al, batton passed sucsessfully.
hip mouse. a good book is the 12x12. 12 steps and 12 traditions.
dont worry to much about the steps. you only have too be concerned with step one at the moment. yuor sponser when you get one will guide you through the rest andyou'll hear at step meetings gwnarally what the ohters are and what they mean to people.
the 12 steps are a recovery program. which is proven to work. tomorrow when i have time (he says... might be in the week though) i'll post what i made of them, and a basic outline of what i did. but that dont really matter now. as your at the beginning (if you should follow through) of the start of a life behond your wildest dream. promise!.
another good book(s) are as bill see's it. the AA big book. came to belive. and living sober. these can be gotten from most meetings if not gotten then ordered. daliy refelction is a good book too. as id Na's just for today. the latter 2 have daily small portion s that can help.
with the kneeling down thing i do it. as i think it helps me be humble. i aint never kneeled before no man. but then no man ever help me recover from the semminly hopeless state of miond and body. sometimes i dont even know what i am praying to. as my god change's week in week out. the important thing to remember is that its a god of your understanding and is not a punishing god. (unless your like feelie)just ask for what ever you need to get through the day. relating to what you know will happen. if any fear comes up ask for that to be removed and for your god or HP if thats easyer to direct your attention to what he/she would have you do. the serinity prayer is good to. at times of anger. also try saying thy will be done.
but i would like to affirm you for getting to AA. and surgest getting a sponser. look for someone that has what you want(not there car or anything as i thought) but how they act and treat people. take a couple of weks to do so. and take some phone numbers. and just enjoy the fellowship you have just joined. i love my life today and this time last year i wanted to die but was to scared to do anything about it. plus if some1 said i was an alcoholic i would have been outraged. but i can say that i am today and embrace that. i also know now i can never controll my drinking as i always used to tell myself. i lost that years ago and it will never return however much i wanted it too. today i dont need it . i'm free.
hope this jelps. cant help on the retreat as i needed to stay and fight my demons. (well went to rehab anyway. good luck and if you do go away remember the problem will come with you so get to meeetings there and dont be afraid to ask for help. phone and that. and im here sometimes also https://www.stepchat.com is good. feel free to pm or even better post here as it may help the lurkers.....
Lewt.
