Thanks Chris :) Best wishes to you too.
I'm just backtracking cos I wish I hadn't have mentioned it lol!
    How are you doing tonight?
    Happy New Year! (nearly)

  • Nicola i feel for you but you answer your own questions. You love the sober dad, but he dosent want to be sober. It is entirely up to you what you want your children to see.
If your father cant help himself and it looks like he has tried then i think unfortunately, you have to face the facts he wants to drink, and i promise you nothing comes between a drinker and a drink when he/she wants one no-one , no matter how much we love our loved ones. All I can do is offer you support i cannot help your father nor can anyone he sounds like he dosent want help. Please dont think i am being negative I am just trying to be honest.
  • Hi, Sorry for jumping in but I badly need some advice please.
My dad is an alocoholic (35 years).......... I have managed to get him into sheltered housing (wouldn't let them send him home from hospital), he has been doing fantastic...........

However today it transpires that something has set him off and he has been drinking for a week ( has been hiding it as I have visited him everyday for the last 4 years), today there was the old familiar glass and drunk father;.....[QUOTE=nicolaspets

I think you are a wonderful daughter...but you have to learn......you have to let your parents live their life....TRUST me ...I know how difficult this is..(I'm not saying it is easy...anything but.....but you cannot live their life for them)......I've put myself through hell for years..my mum is bi-polar..........(manic depressive)...just been through another (very serious) relapse....nearly saw her sectioned.......i flipped.........I have struggled/faught the past 13/14/15 years to keep her well enough to stay our of a psych ward....she was ill enough to go into one....but now she is in 24 hour care...so that puts another slant on it....NHS will not waste money treating people when in 24 hr care...whether or no it is right for them..

You have to get the people on side who can help..........I'm sad to say...you will probably have to shout for it...I wish you all the luck in the world...just remember..you have people on side;)

If you need any help in writing letters to 'the people in authority/those who can help.....' call on me...I'm very good at them apparently....I'm very good at getting to the point while (being a complete !!!!) and keeping an air of morality...or something...???'
  • Very much, and I might just call on you, I have just been to the al-anon chat room, and i have had to type ever so fast to keep up with that lot lol.
Thankyou, it is so nice to know that there are people give a damn.
    xx.
And good luck to you with your mother and my very best wishes to her

Bless you sweetie....I know what it is like to deal with a 'long term issue'....my mum has been ill since circa 1970ish...before I was born....don't know any different....at the same time wish I did/glad I don't....(I am the person I am today because of it.....might not like it but..:p ...;) ...:D )

You get on with it cos you have to.....;)
  • Bless you because you care about your mother ( and so you should), and bless you most of all for caring about people like me who need a little bit of support, you are a nice person and you don't realise how much a few kind words help.
    Happy new year!!
    xx

The problem is Nicola you love your dad, your loyalty towards him is lovely it would break my heart to leave someone i loved in that state. Your parents are only human with frailties but in order to help him, you have to help yourself and your own first. I wish you well and him and i hope he realises how much he has to lose. Happy new year everyone from a sober me:eek:

Edit* you are absolutely right about chris she is a really good person:)*
  • I cannot help but love my dad.
