i've thought about it gert, my parents aint but my mum's parents died while she was young and she dont remember. form the disscussions i've had it seems unanswerable. maybe if it could be proved that a gene of something is passed then maybe we could be cured.MAYBE however for now i'll just live by arresting it everyday

I have known a number of people who have decided that they have found the "root cause" of their drinking. They then went on to sort it out and having done that they naturally thought that they could drink again, only to discover to their horror that they couldn't with safety. Not all of them were able to stop again. I do not know whether I was predisposed to alcoholism or whether or not there was another cause. What I do know, however, is that once an alcoholic always an alcoholic.
As has been mentioned a number of times on this thread, one of the symptoms of this illness is to tell you that you are "ok now". This still happens even when the drinking has stopped, which only goes to prove to me that I still have the illness. In my case it comes into my mind that surely after all these years I would be "ok now". Also I was too imature then but I am a lot more mature and surely I would be "ok now"
I am not suggesting that this also applies to anyone in particular but it certainly applies to me.
The way I tend to think, is that there is a root cause that causes you to become a alcoholic, however once you are one, then you are one. Instead of one problem, you then have two. You can't deal with one, you have to deal with both.

I've often wondered if alcholism is genetic, my father was a drinker, I wasn't even brought up by him, didn't meet him till I was in my 20's, my mum isn't a big drinker nor is my step father, so it was not something I was brought up with, any thoughts
Thats been said on here before, I've got no problems in my family afaik

Not good, I've been like a bear with a sore head all day, just looking for a argument, so I haven't let myself post on here, even though I've been around all day.
Stress headache, jittery, can't concentrate, not much helps :D
Finding it very hard to do anything, apart from walk round in circles

I not worried whether I can do it tbh, I know I can do it, its just a pain in the backside living with this headache.
I think I'd best be away for a while, because I really am in a bad mood :)

Certain areas of the world have a tendency to alcoholism, Norway springs to mind. And the Hebrides, invaded by the Norwegians and where my family come from ;)

Could that be more of a cultural thing Al Mac? If I remember correctly - Finland (I've been there ;) ) has one of the worse alcoholism rates, and also the one of the highest tax rates on alcohol. Compare that to somewhere where all day drinking, relaxed drinking and all that - what are the rates of alcoholism there? I wonder if its the cultural attitude towards drink that is a big factor?
But, I reckon many of us have inherited addictive tendencies or a predisposition from somewhere. I would have thought I had 'got' it from my mum, but maybe I am just more aware of alcoholism, and thats why I've labeled my self as an alcoholic?
