I'm alright. Had a couple of drinks today, but didn't get drunk.
I've been prescribed some medication that doesn't go well with drink, so I suppose I've got to give it up. Always knew I should anyway!Stay-at-home, attached Mummy to a 23lb 10oz, 11 month old baby boy.0 -

Hi all,
This is my first post on this thread. I have been reading through the thread and think its about time I joined in. I need as much help as I can get. My OH has an alcohol problem. I do not want to say (or possibly admit) that he is an alcoholic as he seems to be able to control it most of the time. However, the last 2.5 years have been very stressful for him - 2004 he was ill with blood poisoning and nearly died - 2004 onwards his mother has alzeimers and is deterioting rapidly - 2005 - he was suspended from work for taking alcolhol in - 2006 he was sacked for misconduct (unrelated incident) and this is going to Tribunal later this year for unfair dismissal. During this period as well we were having the usual teenage problems with our 13 yr old daughter but hopefully this is now over the worst.
Last December when he was suspended was his lowest point, but to give him credit he sought medical help, went to counselling and I think got over the worst, but there are still times when he drinks too much, hides drinks (vodka and beer), lies about how much he has had and generally is not nice to be around. Since his sacking he has failed to find permanent work and I think this is why is is seeking refuge in alcohol again - I don't want him to slip back to where he was last year but don't know how to stop him. He is not going to the docs or counselling any more as he does not consider that he still has a problem.
I like to have a drink as well, maybe a glass or two of wine a couple of times a week and feel that this is encouraging him. Should I stop drinking when he is around? Is it possible for a near alcoholic to merely cut down on the amount they drink or should they really stop altogether. Socialising is a big part of our life but I am prepared to cut this out to help him. What scares me is the thought that this is a lifetime change and not merely something we can get over in a year or two.
Sorry for the long post - I really don't know what to do. Like others, I have considered divorce but under neath it all he is a good man going through a hard time and I want to help him.
