I agree their system is rubbish compared to their sales volume, but it's not really cost cutting at the expense of service, it's more a case of does it work 99% of the time (yes)...

To implement a real-time system across multiple supply chains and tens of thousands of product lines replacing the current 6 hourly batch update would cost tens of millions of pounds...

They have looked at the potential cost vs benefits and found it probably doesn't add up...

The current system for the website is basically a front-end that reads from one database, and it's that db that's only updated by the supply chain management system once or twice daily...

Surely with your experience you can appreciate the enormous challenges presented by building a new system to replace their in house legacy logistics system...systems which are dependant on procedures and processes that have been shown to be cost effecftive in the long term.

Not to mention that they sub-contract their warehouse/distribution center management to 3rd party specialists such as Exel Logistics (used to be Tibbett & Britten / Dartford Securites)...

The problem for M&S is that they automated their distribution system ahead of the market in 1988 (Yes, God help me, I was there whenthey upgraded to the MUWS and WRECS systems) . . . and now that mainframe AS/400 based warehouse legacy system is mission critical...buried under dozens of add-ons ...

None of their competition including NEXT deal with their volumes through the website, and they all have newer systems!

Trust me, we won't see a major improvment in terms of the website being real-time updated with the warehouse for a long long time...

Points take....However, that doesn't explain where the emails explaining that items out of stock are. ;)
  • I'm still waiting for my order placed at 10:30pm on Wed 22nd.
I'm not holding out much hope of getting my items now.

I ordered on the thursday morning and my order arrived yesterday, so there may still be hope. has your card been charged?

I had email about 2 o-o-s items and then on thursday i got email saying an item from your order is o-o-s but it didn't say which item! I've been charged too much, and only refunded for one thing but I can't work out if there's something still coming, or if the o-o-s email was supposed to apply to more than one item and they just forgot to refund my card for the others? confused!

Last year I complained about their saying an item was o-o-s after my parcel had been despatched, taking my total down to a level where I had to pay postage. They replied saying as a goodwill gesture they would refund the postage, but they didn't. They haven't replied to my emails about them not having refunded me.

I am not impressed by the customer service :(

I placed an order about 5 minutes after midnight on the night M&S sale started and :jit arrived this morning with all items there. That is a first for me as usually half if not all of the items are out of stock. Is it only me but are your clothes items very badly wrapped in polywrap:confused:But at least I got my items.

i got a couple of things earlier and they were okay but the last parcel contained badly wrapped things yes, i think they might have been returns that had been checked and then bundled so tightly that i can't see the labels.

Ordered on the Weds Evening about 10.20 pm and received Thursday evening all in stock but alot went back the cardigans and dresses were such poor quality didn't open them just looked throught the bag and thought tat for £7 i wouldn't give them £2 for it, at least someone in the Middlesbrough store has a chance to buy it thats where i returned it to.

I was happy with the pants and camisoles for my little girl for the price of £2 a pack but they are geting more flimsy every time i buy them:rolleyes::rolleyes::p

    I've been Money Tipped!
I got a lovely linen skirt for £9 for me in the sale and a pair of non sale school trousers for my son (making the postage cheaper due to their promotion on school uniforms). Very pleased overall. Prompt delivery.

Ok, go ahead, sue them for millions, but I bet the most you get is a 'sorry about that' and a £10 voucher with absolutely no admittance by M&S about breakiug their T&C's

That's if they reply at all.
Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending
