I was told to make smaller orders to stand a chance of receiving the items, but that doesn't work either. The service is dire, but still not as bad as Debenhams.0

M&S, Debenhams, and Boots - wouldn't you think one of them could employ an IT dept that could programme real-time stock control?I was told to make smaller orders to stand a chance of receiving the items, but that doesn't work either. The service is dire, but still not as bad as Debenhams.0

I have written to a couple of their Board Members in recent years after appalling service in the online sales. Their online systems are run by Amazon, who hardly have the same online business model as M&S. I can't imagine that Amazon need to have real-time stock management systems that M&S should have.
I get promises of improvement (and a voucher or two)- but never see it get any better.

Amazon has real time stock, M&S the last time i checked only do a check every couple of hours. That means when everyone piles in and orders, they can do too many order confirmations for a particular item and leave a lot of people disappointed. This is why people never have this problem with amazon. Hence the "quick, only 3 left" messages under items sometimes.
I am totally shocked that this problem is still happening, each sale I am convinced they will have this problem fixed but 3 years later, same issue.
From reading posts, it sounds like the out of stock email is not fully automated, not surprised. It probably involves someone doing some analysis on who didn't get an item and creating an email list. They also probably don't have the resource to email everyone quickly.
On a side note, I always threaten to stop doing M&S sales but I always come back, the bargains are excellent.0

I ordered 48 items so had to do in 2 orders (25 in one and 23 in the other)so got free nominated delivery for both. I now have 10 items left per order so if they dare to charge me 2 lots of P+P there will be big trouble.
Still not showing as dispatched so no doubt will lose even more by then.
 Every year it's the same.
Not even had a courtesy no stock email either...
 when did you order?0

Mine's not despatched yet, but only 2 items can be changed, and those are the only 2 that are still in stock 52% tight0 52% tight0

All the things on my 1st order (placed 9.30 Weds, due for delivery 30 July - 4 Aug) are still showing on my orders page, and are now 'Despatching Soon' and the option to change that order has disappeared. Fingers crossed....
It was all younger kidswear btw.0

Oh dear, this is NOT looking good! just read thru these posts and logged into my account: had ordered over £150 worth on Wed 10pm; now a handful of items have a "change" option next to them and the rest (mostly younger boyswear) - no such option!
I chose nominated day delivery-does this mean most of my order won't have a chance of arriving as its OOS?? If so, I'd rather cancel the whole order rather than go thru the pain of returning just the few and re-claiming P+P!!!:mad:0

That was only worth doing with free delivery on orders of £30 or more which has stopped now.
The order I placed on Wednesday at 10.30, nominated day delivery, arrived in full at 8.30 this morning. I've got another order pending but I suspect some of the items in that will be out of stock.0
