Just shoehorn my bit in here; what's "mom" all about? Why have so many people started using this instead of "mum"?Ivory_Tinkler wrote: »Mom has always been used in Birmingham, in fact they think it odd that other people use Mum. I have a friend who lives there who tells me this.
Yes, Ivory Tinkler, you're quite right. I'm originally from Birmingham and it's always been "Mom", even as far back as my Mom calling her Mom "Mom"
and I'm getting on! Probably extends to most parts of the West Midlands. 0 -
I think its a little petty to attack posters merely because of grammatical error's, it shows a weakness to contribute anything substantial or constructive in a thread, especially if the point of it, is to for some reason, attack the poster, it fails drastically.
Not everyone is word perfect, but it does not make them any less better than those with a dictionary shoved up their rectum. If anything, attacking a poster just because of his or her grammar proves just how !!!!!! those with qualifications actually become.
The "My Dad's better than your Dad, because he drives a better car" scenario.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Classic. Was it deliberate? Not everyone is word perfect, but it does not make them any less better than those with a dictionary shoved up their rectum. If anything, attacking a poster just because of his or her grammar proves just how !!!!!! those with qualifications actually become.
Your shoving a dictionary up your rectum is not a good idea because you won't be able to read it. Unless your head is up there as well.0 -

Don't get me started! I've retired from teaching English!
The media have a lot to answer for. I regularly hear " Such and such has impacted on ........"
NO! It has 'had an impact on .......' or 'has effected ....'
Using 'regular instead of 'ordinary' is also maddening.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -

Now that we can thank the Americans for.
I hate the way they say "thorough" as "thuroe" (I know it's not spelt right it's just how it sounds). :mad:0 -

Lots of people on this site mis-spell my user name. GrammerGirl, I ain't.
I tend to ignore spelling/grammar on here because if I paid attention to it my head would explode. I do think, though, that for those struggling with English, writing on forums is a great way to improve.0 -
Oh and in regards to our beloved (sense the tone) councils, they've actually announced they won't be including apostrophes in street signs any more, as they get too many complaints from people when they get it wrong. I find that insulting. If they bothered to check the signs before they went into production, there wouldn't be any complaints in the first place. Hell, they could email me and I'd proofread the darn signs! Infuriating, ridiculous, and completely avoidable.0
