Just shoehorn my bit in here; what's "mom" all about? Why have so many people started using this instead of "mum"?

This seems as good as any time to ask - I know what it means, but what does 'OP' stand for?

'Original Poster' or 'Original Post'. Refers to the first post or poster in a thread.

Why do people use the American spelling of words instead of the correct English spelling

    Offence / not offense
    Defence / not defense
    Licence (noun) / Not license(verb)

I suppose that the fact that the Microsoft spell checker is American is the cause.

    Tuggy
    you got me there. :o

I don't usually use American spelling in my posts, guess I missed that one when I did 'Preview'.

Apostrophes are the one thing that can wind me up, guaranteed. There is a letting agency on the way to town which has a giant banner on the wall saying 'LANDLORD'S WANTED!' What, just one? I have to go past it every day as well, drives me mad! Also punctuation errors on shop signs, you think for something like that you'd get it spellchecked?

I get annoyed by the mistaken use of apostrophes as well!!

There is a Next locally, and behind the counter was a large sign advertising latest "shirt's"!!

And in the lifts at the local hospital there are signs saying " please vacate this lift if patient's.."

It just amazes me. These signs have been drawn up, approved, printed etc, and no-one has looked and thought something was wrong. Does that mean that there are a lot of uneducated people in these large organisations who cannot spell or punctuate?

I didn't pass any exams at school as my parents just wanted me out working to bring money in so they could get drunk (no, I am not working on a sympathy vote..), but have improved myself educationally since.

I am by no means perfect, and have been known to moan on here. But you have to oput things into context.

Mom has always been used in Birmingham, in fact they think it odd that other people use Mum. I have a friend who lives there who tells me this.

    I hate the term "gotten."

The ones that annoy me are people who open threads asking for help but don't have the courtesy to respond with an update or a thanks. They get lots of different suggestions from different members - a lot of the members are Solicitors, Insurance Brokers, IFAs, Shop Owners, Civil Servants and they give good advice completely free, normally within minutes of the OP's post.

Yeah but to be fair, a lot of us give pointless, misleading and just plain wrong advice as well.

I love it when someone starts a post with "I need some legal advice". I always want to reply "well go and see a solicitor. If, on the other hand, you want the misguided ramblings of a bunch of webmongs then you've come to the right place."

If I ever find my infinitives have split I either take them back for a refund or throw them away:rotfl:
