Recurring Payments Warning! discussion

If the first payment was by a card, how did they know the account details to set up the DD?
Cancelling the card may or may not help - this depends on how determined PO are to take the money.
If you really paid by the card, tell HSBC that you cancel the CPA and they must refund the money immediately after it is taken by PO. If they suggest to cancel the CC, do this, but still make it clear that you cancel the CPA.
Alternatively, after the money is taken call HSBC and report this transaction as an unauthorised payment.0 -
Grumbler......i think i paid with my card over the phone.....i have no idea how they managed to set up the direct debit, i am now ringing HSBC and will tell them what you have said...thank you for your advice x0

Logged onto the Bank Today to find that "Home Protect" have taken a payment of £166 for house insurance, on a house that is insured elsewhere.
I always thought that companies cannot keep credit card details for more than 6 months, which is what I was told by Premier Inn on a recent refund claim.
So, here we are. "Home Protect" have taken £166 despite us discussing the non-continuance of the policy with then in Late November.
Only when we checked the credit cards, did we notice that the payment was made. Since then, we have moved and let them know what we have moved and rent out the old property.
Additionally, no renewal paperwork was received, therefore non-continuance was expected...
Cheer HomeProtect, this means an endless amount of stressful phone calls to Natwest & HomeProtect..0 -
Just phoned John Lewis to cancel a CPA because I could not contact the merchant. Their customer advisor repeated the canard that the bank cannot cancel a CPA, only the merchant. Unbelievable!
Cahoot used to offer a one-time credit card number, designed for buying stuff on the web, which was perfect for trial offers. Sadly they discontinued it. Unless there is a shortage of numbers this is an opportunity for another bank to move in. I would sign up like a shot.0 -
Struggling to get money back from Norton Antivirus - when I log into my account it says there is no Recurring Payment in place and yet they keep taking £39.99!!! Shocking that accounts can just be hacked like this!!0

I have just found this thread but had unfortunately already posted on another thread!! Anyway I've jumped through hoops to get my continuous payment cancelled. After long conversation with bank customer service who said they didn't have the facility then a phone call from bank informing me of the position.i.e. they can note my account stop a payment of the same amount but not if the amount alters which knowing subscription will be renewed at a different rate! A waiting game. Have tried many times to contact Avast. My e mail address is wrong, my password is wrong!!E mails to correct this don't arrive and the phone number seems to have been erased! unless you live in the USA or another country.0

I changed banks recently and transferred all DD's and SO's, but found I was still with Green Flag. Only when I went into my bank did I discover I was on a continuous payment scheme with theme. I'd never heard of this before, even though it seems to be a common practice. I've rung Green Flag and cancelled, telling them I want a DD next time.0

How would your bank know if you had a CPA with Green flag or anybody else?0 -
And what did this have to do with switching?0
