Hi,
My partner's mum it a termporary visiter to the uk, and was recently in hospital overnight (in the uk). He has just received a large bill for the cost of the hospital treatment.
However, he took out travel insurance for her (money supermarket - Diamond), stating his uk home address as hers too, as she's staying with us. I've looked at the policy details, and I can't work out if she is eligible to making a claim or not. Clearly she wasn't travelling from our home as such, but the policy is for anywhere in Europe (I assume), so would this cover the UK as well?
Many thanks for your help.0 -
I wouldn't think the policy would cover her. Policies taken out in the UK are to cover journeys that start and end in the UK. If she was just visiting from another country she should have had insurance to cover her from travel from her originating country.0

If she is from an European country an EHIC card might cover the costs0

Thanks for your replies, I'm sure you must be right. As she's staying here a while longer, is there some other insurance he can take out, in case she's ill again? Maybe health insurance? She not from Europe unfortunately, she's from South-east Asia.0

Hello! I am planning to go to New Zealand for a month, then to Australia for 3 months. I plan to fly via the US and perhaps the Middle or Far East on my return (possibly with a stop for a couple of nights). I am not into extreme sports, the most risky thing I'm considering is scuba diving. Does anyone have any recommendations for insurers offering cover for an extended, worldwide holiday (I won't be working over there)?0

The problem I think you'll have is that it doesn't look like you know exactly when you'll be coming back - insurer's don't like this. To get around this, what you can do is book your insurance for a few weeks longer than you'll need because your policy will automatically expire when you return home.
Recommendations? Call the well known travel insurers directly and ask them - you'll get honest info about whether you'll be covered and a price.
Try:
Columbus Direct on 0870 033 9988 (or freephone 0800 0680060)
Atlas Direct on 08444 823 400
Direct Travel Insurance on 0845 605 2700
(there's many more but that's all I had time to find)
Let us know how you got on!0 -

Have you tried 24/7 travel insurance backpacking cover, they also include lots of activities in their policy. You can get a 10% discount by entering the promotion code 'save'.0 -
Just had a big shock with Atlas Direct's medical people.
Last year they charged an extra premium of £9.49 to cover me which I thought was reasonable. This year, with no changes in my condition, it's jumped to £76!!
I phoned their helpdesk and the lady said they were having a lot of compaints about it since they changed the people who did the screening.0 -
Hi,
You could try World Nomads. They cover you for pretty much every country in the world and if you are not sure when you will be returning you can extend this whilst you're away via the internet which not many providers do.LouiseEmma wrote: »Hello! Hi
Can anyone PLEASE help me, I'm at my wits end trying to find travel insurance!! I've been looking for a policy which isn't extortionate for days and am having no luck.
Basically, my problem stems from the fact that (1) I plan to run a marathon on holiday, and (2) I plan to go hiking above 2000m (although not much over 2000m). I finally found a great policy which includes marathon running (Elect Platinum) for £40. I spent ages reading through the wording and everything was fine.
The only part that wasn't ok was that they only covered hiking up to 2000m (which by the way is not that high, I'm not mountaineering or anything, just walking)!! So I called to have this changed and they said that there is no way they would possibly increase this altitude ceiling! All insurance companies tend to have the same limit.
So I either take my chances with the final 600m of my hike or pay over the top for specialist insurance!! grrr
Can anyone PLEASE recommend a company that is a bit more flexible? I find it hard to believe that I can be covered for marathon running, skydiving etc but not for hiking above an arbiitrarily low atltitude!
Thanks0
