Just after a bit of advice and maybe some ball park figures. My wife has recently developed an atrial fibrilation problem. She is taking Beta blockers but the local cardiologist reckons she will need an ablation as the drugs aren't controlling it well enough. Anyway, my question is.....does anyone have any rough ideas how much travel insurance would be for us for travel to the US in January? My wife is 42.

    Any ideas would be welcomed.

    Cheers
Unfortunately no-one on here would be able to tell you this.

You would first have to find a company that would cover your wife and get a quote from them.

Fair enough. I thought it was probably a long shot but I just wondered whether there was anyone else in a similar boat who had managed to get insurance.

    Thanks anyway

hmmmm there is a thread somewhere about Pre Existing Medical Conditions / Older Travellers, but it's somewhere in the piles of threads...

but failing that, try the British Insurance Brokers' Association website

    http://www.biba.org.uk/consumer/findbroker.asp

scroll down to Travel and there should be a section for medical conditions. It then gives you contact brokers that may offer cover. Don't know about the t+cs for each company or what kind of price.

My friend had terminal cancer and was having problems getting insurance for a 5 month trip to Zante. I suggested the Association of British Insurers and they gave her a couple of companies to try. All the cancer related companies had huge premiums.

She got insurance with Citibond for £67 (sixty seven). This did not cover any claim related to her cancer, but if she had needed to claim it only meant an increased excess of £250 so it was a win-win situation.

here's the link to the travel pre existing...thread:

Luci: when companies hear the words terminal and cancer in the one sentance it sends them running the other way... so those in that position have to either bare the risk or pay for the high premium.
Did they check out any of the cancer charities for insurance? They may be able to refer to specialists or maybe GPs in this area might know?

She checked out BreakthroughBreastCancer and several others and they all quoted over £1000. I think £67 for 5 months away was a real bargain even without having teminal cancer.
  • We have recently booked a holiday through a travel agent. In the brochure under travel insurance it says that you cannot travel with them if you do not have insurance. Can they demand you have insurance? Is that legal?

Not sure if it's legal but it sounds as if it's part of their terms and conditions, and if you have booked through them it must mean you have accepted their terms and conditions. They cannot insist that you take their insurance, you can buy your travel insurance from anyone but they may want to know who it is with. We never buy travel company's insurance, always buy elsewhere as it is always cheaper, and sometimes we have been asked to provide the name of the insurer. It's never been a problem for us.

Also, if you are going abroad it is foolish not to have travel insurance. If something happens, depending on where you are the cost could be horrendous and if repatriation is necessary think of the cost of the flight back with specialist medical help.
