Hi

Any ideas about a good deal for back packing insurance for one year in Australia/New Zealand? I just don't know where to start looking.
Thanks.
I belive STA Travel do backpackers insurance or you could try a broker.
• I've just been told about a discount available from Travel Insurance Web (they claim to be the cheapest travel insurance provider in the UK!) to help celebrate England getting through to the Semi-finals of the 2007 Rugby World Cup they're offering a 20% discount on all travel insurance bought before the end of the tournament - that makes a 31 day annual European policy less than £20!

Thought this was funny too :D
For our friends in the southern hemisphere: please note we cannot cover you for disappointment.

• Hey all - I can't find anything here on MSE about true year-long (or more) holiday cover, cheapest I have found is £300 but if there is anything out there to seek out more good deals on this then I'm sure more people than just meself would find it useful :)

I am off travelling through India, Indonesia, Aus, NZ, S.Africa, S.America and if I have any cash left the good ol' US of A and it should take me at least 2 years hopefully more - but so far I have only found one company that wants less than £540 per year, and at £300 (not including USA but that won't be a factor for the first year) they're a damned welcome discovery, but is there anywhere else?? I have found literally no others =(

Official Evilhippy® hugs & beers* to anyone who can help us crusty travellers get covered for less :D

Hi

Thanks.

STA travel, while truly wonderful for one year multi stop flight tickets (12 international flights across 5 continents for about £1500 - nice!! :D ) their travel insurance is horrendously priced, and is, I'm guessing, where they really make their money.

These guys seem to offer the same cover for literally (less than) half the price: http://www.worldwideinsure.com/WWTswitcher.php?policy=LS&partnerID=null&partner=null
The scope of coverage and their individual values seems the same for their top package (£300) as STA's top package (which came in at about £660 I think?) so get your ticket there but not your insurance! Visas didn't seem too bad either, but they almost certainly whack something on and going to the embassies or hunting through the various brokers should shave some readies off your total. A 12 month working visa for New Zealand is £75 and a 3 month visitor visa for Australia (working prohibited, but who wants to pick fruit anyway) is £20, both from STA travel.

Oh, and seeing as I just got my head around this myself this week I may as well share if it helps at all: I sent off my NZ visa yesterday (it's the 1-year working jobby) and that incurs a month's processing time, no quick option available apparently so factor in that much time at least before you go! I nearly came unstuck this way.
The Australian 3-month non-working visa gets attached to your passport on application (in STA travel for example) and is automatically activated when you cross the Aussie border so no forms needed with that one, but a working visa for Aus might be more work... as if the thankless fruit farms didn't offer enough pitfalls already lol

Anyway I hope some of that helps.

Here's a linkto the Capital One site, there's a link there to the detail of the insurance too. I understand that you do have to have used the card to pay for 75% of the holiday/accomodation in order for the insurance to be effective:

Anyone else who has read the Ts & Cs of the insurance come up with any more exclusions for medical cover other than VD, HIV, Aids & Aids related diseases, pregnancy or traveling against medical advice? That's all I can seem to find. My wife has a number of pre-existing conditions, but none on that list.

From the Summary of Insurance Policy on their webiste

Summary of Travel
Assistance Covers
keyfacts.jpg

This Summary does not contain the full terms and conditions of the policy. You still need to read the wording of the Policy for a full description of the terms, conditions and exclusions.

1.9 Significant and Unusual Exclusions and Limitations

The following exclusions apply:

circumstances known to Covered Person; refer to section 5.1 of the policy;

You will still have to declare any pre-existing conditions to give them the chance to tell you whether they will be covered. The info on the website is only a summary, you would need to see the actual policy wording to know for definite all the T & Cs and exclusions for your own peace of mind.

Just after a bit of advice and maybe some ball park figures. My wife has recently developed an atrial fibrilation problem. She is taking Beta blockers but the local cardiologist reckons she will need an ablation as the drugs aren't controlling it well enough. Anyway, my question is.....does anyone have any rough ideas how much travel insurance would be for us for travel to the US in January? My wife is 42.

Any ideas would be welcomed.

Cheers

Hi Darren - You'll need to go to the quote page directly from the http://www.travelinsuranceweb.com/rwc/ page - have you done that? The quote engine doesn't actually display the discount you're receiving... just the price (including the discount).

Let me know if you're still having problems!

Dan

@evilhippy - you can use the 20% discount from travel insurance web - they will cover a single trip up to 365 days... is that long enough? Just got a quote back @ £156.00 - otherwise you'll need to buy backpackers travel insurance... the levels of cover are lower but then again so are the premiums ;)
