Although Martin's article suggests otherwise, it seems that most insurers no longer cover children over 18 in full time education within a family policy. My son turns 18 this year and my present insurer, Insure & Go, will not cover him from that time. Moneysupermarket found me only one, rather expensive, policy that would (Norwich Union).

Has anyone else had more success?

Try Simple travel insurance on https://www.primarytravelinsurance.co.uk
They will cover children in full time education upto 22 and they can travel separately. We paid 57.81 (no baggage cover- on household policy)

This may be of interest to any over 80 year old intrepid travellers. I have found Egg.com to be the cheapest when arranging travel insurance for my mother - she is now 81 and enjoys good health - I'm still getting her a sensible priced insurance.

I have tried quotes from the links on Martin's page but none so far beat Egg.
I have just had a quote for 15 days in Europe (Switzerland) for a couple, ages 64 and 70 for £33-14, this does include a discount for paying by Egg Card (10%) I think. This insurance is underwritten by Axa so not a unheard of name.
They insure up to 85 years of age. You can get an online quote from
https://www.egg.com and then the link to Travel Insurance.

  • Sorry folks I'm new so hope this is OK. Thanksfor general help from these posts. We have age problems with insurers (none with health - I'm 65 Brian 69). Mostly we cannot get annual travel policies for more than 45 days or even single trip for more than 60. Hoping for three months in OZ are looking at using medicare Australia when there but cannot find policies to cover just the journeys. Did find one but it would not cover stop overs and hoping to make the most of the trip we would like to do Singapore or Bangkok to break the journeys.

I found a travel insurance company called Marcus Hearn & Company Limited, who are covering my wife and myself annual insurance worldwide for about £46. Martin has recommended Insurefor.com, which is about £60. I have checked both policies but didn't find any major difference. Does anyone know of any reasons why Marcus Hearn & Company Limited does not appear under Martin's recommendations.

May be because they don't even consider anyone age 70!!

I used this company for my Mum, aged 71, recently. She has an existing medical condition and I was able to get her full insurance cover for £32.

Sorry I posted in a hurry earlier.
Yes the Smilemore account does charge £10 a month but for £120 a year, with an interest paying account, where else can you get insured for worldwide travel, with no 30 day limit. for that
I have been a customer with RBOS for 40 years and they run a similar scheme at £12 per month but when I reached 65 the was a surcharge imposed and limitations, when I reached 70, finito, no more insurance available anywhere.
