Hmmm, looks good. Am going to have a look tomorrow.

Does anyone know if they accept Debit cards though? It's stupid if they only accept cash.....who would have a thousand quid lying around in the house?

    They take debit cards.

You've got to ask yourself though. Do you really need to spend £800 on a Notebook?

at this price i do think its a very good buy - i have been searching the net and this spec laptop is alot more elsewhere...
  • My local aldi certainly accepts debit cards. I know a few years ago it was cash only in aldi though.

I don't think they take credit cards though.
  • i paid 1200 i think with 3year guarantee.

on a side note invoice said it came from a company called northamber but i bought from shop fujitsu i think

how noisy is the fan??? im after a quiet machine!!

I don't have a noise meter - you'll just have to buy one and see! I don't know how it would compare to a similar spec one - processors get hot nowadays, even when they aren't doing much. My old laptop's fan hardly ever came on, but then it had a much slower processor.
what is the graphics card like - may play games such as ghost recon from time to time.

The spec is given in the blurb isn't it? Radeon 9700 with 128MB RAM; 1400x1050 display.
how is battery life and build quality of the machine?? do u have any pics?

The battery life I would imagine would be good - 14.4V 4.4Ah. I have never run it off the mains for that long, and because I use Linux it is difficult to give a figure in Windoze terms.

Build quality? Well seems sturdy enough. Nice positive latch on the lid (press side button to open) and battery release mechanism. Lid has a thick sheet of black shiny plastic on it to make it more rigid. All plastic - what would you expect for the price?
is the dvd writer dual layer, and what speed does it write at?

Unless they've changed it since I got one, it's single layer - dual layer was very new then, and is still novel now. Writing both + and - formats still seems not to be universal. Can't remember the speed - it might be in the spec leaflet which you can find on Gericom's website. It reports itself as a QSI DVDRW SDW-042 which you can look up.
can u upgrade the memory to 1gig easily?

The only cover on the back that hasn't got a warranty seal is for the disk drive - so I'd say it would be easy to upgrade the RAM (though if it has two slots and they are both full, I imagine you'd need to throw one of them away and upgrade to 1.25G with a 1G module), but you'll void the warrenty. There are also sealed covers for the CPU and the wifi card.

Someone else asked if the disk drive speed would be enough for "everyday tasks". Yes, certainly - this is a high spec laptop. And a higher speed drive eats more power.

Someone asked about Aldi and credit cards. No, they don't take them, but they take debit cards. I wouldn't take credit cards either if I offered these prices!
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.
  • anyone bought this today? ???

yeah got 1 and it was faulty - kept turning itself off. returned it for a full refund on the spot - wont be going for this one again thats for sure!
  • Bought one aswell. It has so far crashed about 9 times and I cant get the wireless network card to recognise my network. I put in my Lynksys adapter and it works fine. I also bought the Base unit recently and have been very happy with it. It found one local network as soon as I turned it on. The laptop is going back tomorrow. I might try another one if they have any, as the spec is very good for the money. I will let you know what happens
  • Bought one today.

Well impressed...no problems with it (yet!).

Not given it a full workout yet, but have just watched a dvd, and got my wireless broadband set up on it. About 4 hours usage after initial charge, and battery just about needs another charge.

Runs virtually silent, with excellent screen. Didn't realise it came with a carry bag....Bonus!

Comparing it with other similar price laptops, seems like stunning value, especially with 2 years all risk insurance
