    Does it produce black smoke?
If the answer is yes then it passes.
If the anser is no then check that engine is running.
If it is still no then fail.

Some smoke from a Diesel engine does not mean it's knackered. There's so many minor things that can go wrong to cause it to smoke.

blue smoke from a diesel engine that has done 150,000+ miles is bad

well without saying she should obviously get it looked at, but i would wager it is a knackered engine.

Oil change, right grade oil, oil filter, service for the poor cold performance, check the sensors and ecu, it'll last another 150000 miles.

Really, and what if the turbo is leaking oil into the air intake?

Would that also be a knackered engine?

no, but that doesn't explain the other trouble with it.

We'll have to wait until she comes back with a mechanical check.

Blue smoke at start, - could be oil pooling in the turbo overnight caused by a slightly worn seal, if it clears when running it'll still last for years.
