We definitely tired this poor baby out yesterday - she had a 2 hour nap this morning, and I put her down again about half two this afternoon, and she is still asleep... I'm working on the "not waking a sleeping baby" principle, but poor girl will be ready for her tea when she wakes up I'm sure!

I could have taken advantage and done loads of housework in this time, but instead I've been [strike]pratting about on the internet[/strike] job hunting and completing surveys for money/vouchers. (I didn't realise there were so many questions you could ask about beer glasses!) Better finish the unpacking at least - there are carrier bags everywhere- not very baby friendly!

Imogen never had milk with her meals, only water. It did mean for a while we were feeding her every two hours (meal, milk, meal, milk) but she just wouldn't have the two together, despite being a STARVING baby.
Thanks, maybe I will try giving him his lunch bottle a little while after food then:)

    Hi ladies!

I am, at last, taking the plunge and joining you lot after "graduating" from the pregnancy club!

I have a quick question for any other mummies that are formula feeding. Do you make up each feed one at a time (as the guidelines say you should) or do you make them up in advance? I was thinking of having bottles of boiled water ready in the fridge so that i can just add the formula to it when needed - or am I just being a bad, lazy mummy? :o

I look forward to getting to know you all soon and I will probably have lots of questions to ask you.

    TIA, Ruth AKA mollythewestie, x

Re Formula - It is of course everybody's own choice on how to make bottles up....BUT It is important to add the formula when the water is above 70 degrees as there has been found to be a bacteria in the powder that is only killed at this temp.

I do it like this (as per midwife instructions)

Boil Kettle, leave for 10mins (must leave no longer than 30mins)
Add powder to water in bottles straightaway (this ensures that the bacteria is killed.)
Cool quickly by standing in sink of cold water (this ensures that bottle is cooled below 50 degrees as quickly as possible because this is the temp that bacteria breeds at most quickly)
Store in fridge (this stops growth of bacteria)
Heat as and when needed.....I heat mine in the micro as he only has it lukewarm anyway, so wouldn't be hot enough to create 'hot-spots' plus i swish it round to make sure the heat is distributed evenly.

Of course everyone has their own way of doing it, but as she explained to me that the problems have been with bacteria and the best way is to kill and then stop regrowth of bacteria this seems the safest way to me:)

Just to point out (or be annoying and awkward :)) the bacteria wont grow if you have not added the powder to the water until its needed and the water never reaches 50degrees as it should not grow at room temp or colder if only added when needed :)
So technically should be fine to have the water ready in the bottles and add powder when needed

    Hi ladies!

I am, at last, taking the plunge and joining you lot after "graduating" from the pregnancy club!

I am a first time mum and my daughter Bronwen Elizabeth was born on the 6th July weighing 7lbs 9oz by ventouse delivery. It wasn't the easiest birth and we spent 6 days in hospital - I had to have a blood transfusion due to excessive blood loss during delivery, but she was worth it all!
(I will write up my full birth story soon, but I haven't had the time or energy!)

I stopped breast feeding after just 4 days as Bronwen lost a lot of weight because she wouldn't latch properly, so I gave in and gave her formula (she is now gaining weight very well).
I have a quick question for any other mummies that are formula feeding. Do you make up each feed one at a time (as the guidelines say you should) or do you make them up in advance? Congratulations!:j

I personally, make up all my bottles for a 24 hour period first thing in the morning (while Aston is having Brekkie and Ryan is having some floor time)
I make up the bottles with just water, then add milk as and when.
If I'm going out I use the Tommee Tippee formula pots, but don't put them inside the bottles (havent found a way to dry them inside and keep them sterile at the same time unless i touch the outiside.

Am I the only one who doesnt put theirs in the fridge ???
I leave the bottles of cooled boiled water out and add the formula to it as and when needed so that it is served at room temp. Oh and I do 3 at a time - so 3 bottles of water left out, then another 3 etc...
No i never put mine in the fridge, for one I aint got any room and I wont heat up in the micro so it would mean standing them in the boiling water at every feed.

Welcome MTW, what a beautiful baby, I love the second picture with her head held up, never seen a pose like that, its great! About FF, when Toby made me decide to switch to formula, I bought a lot of the ready made stuff, as I was pretty worried about doing it wrong. I was nervous about measuring things wrong and not sticking to the guidelines, and the litre tetrapacks weren't much more expensive than tubs.
Weren't much more? I work it out to be over £20 for 6, 6oz bottles a day for a week
I think £7 a week is alot lol
My neighbour gave me 4 weeks woth of milk tokens last week which has really helped, I've just sent of my form so hopefully will start getting them soon too.

Well, I tried Toby in the seat, and it didn't work! His legs are too chubby and he wouldn't fit. He is pretty short, but very heavy so he is a bit of a porker. In the end I just got in and held him with me!
