Confused over Easyjet baggage allowance ...

I am still confused.com
I am travelling with my family group of 6 in august and have booked 4 pieces of luggage and it says i have 120kg. i know as theres 6 of us we get 20kg each. what i would like to know, does this 120kg mean i can have 4 suitcases at 30kg each? please help with this. thanks

I think i've got it (please confirm)...

If i want to take a bag on the plane with me, it can weigh no more than 20kg & be no bigger than 56x45x25cm. This has no fee.

If i'm travelling with a bag bigger than this (eg suitcase) it needs to be checked in, but still can weigh no more than 20kg. This however does have a standard fee (£18 at last look!!!).

If it does weigh more than 20kg, you will be charged per kg up to a maximum of 32kg (no single bag/suitcase can weigh more than this)

Correct?

There are no weight limits on hand luggage with Easyjet

Otherwise yes if you are travelling by yourself.

nearly correct if you are travelling alone. But, if you made your booking with another person - you can have upto 32kg in one bag. in other words the 2nd person gets 12kgs free - even though you may have only paid for one piece of luggage.

I am looking into this too and have found lots of debate on the web about it!

It seems the confusion is that, in terms of checked luggage, there are two different 'allowances', which Easyjet unhelpfully don't do much to explain.

The first is the 'weight per passenger allowance'

The second is the 'bags per passenger allowance'

The weight per passenger allowance is 20kg. Each passenger is allowed to carry 20kg of hold luggage. This allowance is actually free. You get it automatically by booking your ticket and becoming a 'passenger'.

However, although it's 'free' there's no way of actually using it unless you put that luggage into a bag and check it in. This is where the 'bags per passenger allowance' comes in.

Each passenger gets to choose to check in a certain number of bags (up to 8 according to Easyjet website). Easjyet charges for each bag you decide to check in. Those bags can contain your 'weight per passenger allowance'. But checking in more bags does not increase your 'free' weight allowance. So, check in one bag, and you can put 20kg of stuff in it. Check in two, and you get 20kg spread across 2 bags, and so on. So to repeat, paying for extra bags does not increase your weight limit.

Now, here's the thing. If two of you are travelling on the same booking, so each get the 20kg per passenger 'free' weight allowance. Now, you can choose to check in two bags - one each. That would allow you to put your 20kg weight allowance in each bag. However, and this is the confusing thing, Easyjet (unlike some other airlines) allow you to 'pool' weight. This means that if two of you (on the same booking) specify you only want to check in one bag, Easyjet allows you to use that one bag to be filled with BOTH of your 'free' 20kg luggage allowances. In theory, this would mean you could put 40kg of luggage in one checked bag. HOWEVER, health and safety restrictions mean that airport luggage handlers can't lift more than 32kg in any one bag. So 32kg becomes specified as the maximum weight for that bag.

SO, if you go with this option, health and safety restrictions stop you from gmaking use of yourr maximum 'weight' allowance, but it's a better deal (£18 for 32kg rather than £36 for 40kg) than checking in two bags.

This principle applies up the scale of passengers on the same booking - each get 20kg 'free' entitlement which can be used in any number of paid for bags across the booking.

I'm pretty sure this is correct - but I'm willing to be put right on anything!

Right im officially confuzzled now. Myself, my husband & our infant are travelling to Lanzarote for Christmas. I've paid for ONE bag each way at a cost of £18. When I booked, it said this was for one bag UPTO 32kg. Does it actually mean that? Or am I going to be charged extra for anything above 20kg?

Brilliant tip yeah. You've a combined allowance of 60kg in three bags but you choose to take one bag weighing 32kg. We'll have to get you on Mastermind.

Have managed to get an answer to my question directly from Easyjet now (only took 4 emails!)

Yes I can confirm that for two passengers sharing one piece of baggage you are permitted to take 32kg without incurring any extra costs above the £18 you have already paid.

jammin - bloaty was not claiming that 32kg was more than 60kg, but that 32kg might be enough. She was saying that because you pay per bag, not per 'weight allowance', you can take less bags with more weight.

Her tip is actually very sensible. Based on three people travelling:

3 bags, weighing 20kg each = £18 per bag = £54 = 90p per kilo
2 bags, weighing 30kg each = £18 per bag = £36 = 60p per kilo
1 bag, weighing 32kg = £18 per bag = £18 = 56p per kilo

1 bag at 32kg is clearly the best 'value for money', although you might simply decide you need more than 32kg. If so, then 2 bags weighing 32kg each is the best. 3 bags is never good value in this case.

The second option is clearly the best - as long as you can lift the suitcase!
