Spending 68% of my salary on rent!! :( How can i get it lower??

ive read them but i just dont see them as 'luxuries' at all!
I cant get any channels through my TV port without having sky,
so its not a 'luxury', its just the basic having a TV.
And when i said i i didnt just mean 'TV', that £36 package was my tv, movie channels and internet combined.
Ive decided that since i never even watch the movies on the moview channels since i like watching movies online for free that have just been released in cinema..
So have cancelled the £10 from there, so me getting access to TV channels costs me £16, unlimited internet which i needed ALOT costs me £10,
and the £10 i saved form movie channels can pay for my '2nd haircut'.
Even though i dont know how on earth anyone can claim an £8 haircut is alot.
Most of the people on this site seem to live in deserted rural areas of the country! :rotfl:
Where you can get everything you want for under £1.
When you go to any hairdressers in london/surrey and ask for a haircut for under £15 they would laugh you out of the shop,
you tried asking for an under £30 in any salon and they would collapse in laughter.
So getting an £8 cheap one isnt especially fancy.
And in regards to me spending less than £20 per week on alcohol, again in london/surrey if you go to ANY bar or club you will be looking at a MINIMUM of £3/£4 for a pint of beer, £4 for any mix-drink.
So being able to budget to just £20 per week by buying all drinks from supermarket always is extremely hard to do.
As others have said, Freeview - one off payment to buy the box and then no further monthly outlay. Yes basic channels but you cannot afford more and you need to cut your cloth to suit. Or if you already have a sky box, cancel your subscription and use their free channels although that would mean internet is hit..maybe the £10 saving you are making now you have cut out the movies would be best placed going into the general outgoings rather than into a haircut you can not afford.
Alcohol - Not an essential and you are paying way too much each month...even if it is cheaper than going out to the bars and clubs. You probably spend more in a month on alcohol than I do in 2 years (and I used to like my drink but can no longer afford it).
Haircuts - Barber shop? Our local one does them cheap (nope, not a rural place either), it's an old fashioned barbers, no fancy gel or that palava but he can do styles...I get 3 boys hair cut for less than a tenner (one has to pay almost adult rate as he is nearly 16). Their hair is cut at the most, once every 2 months. Again, you cannot currently afford to have it cut twice a month (I last had my hair cut in Feb, before that it had been about a year...I can't afford it over food and bills, they come first)
Food - You currently spend almost as much as I do and I have to feed a family of 4. Value foods, reduced items and clever planning is what is needed.
Your biggest problem though is that your accomodation is expensive and maybe a little ambitous for you....a flatshare, being a lodger etc are more suited to your income and outgoings and a lot of bills are usually included.
I am not sure your email to your landlord will win you any kind of reduction in rent. To be honest, if I got that, I would be rather eek about it. It was not worded in a way which would win you any allowances from your LL (even if you belittle the emotions, they are important when dealing with people, especially if it is something to benefit you!). Nicely, nicely is the way to go..not you will reduce because I say so. Yes, it may save him/her money from not having to pay agency fees but emotions do come into it and they may have their back put up so much, they don't really care!
I too used to earn lots of money (legally and paid tax at source too) and know the feeling of having extra pennies in my pocket but the truth is, you don't have those extra pennies in your pocket now so you have to make changes. 18k a year is actually not a bad salary, there are umpteem people surviving on a lot less.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

Ive been homeless and lived on the streets enough times when i was young to know what a financial hardship is.
You're barely out of nappies mate, when did you find the time to be 'homeless enough times'

i live in central london - there's loads of cheap hairdressers about, you can get your haircut for £6 / £7. frankly there's no difference in the quality of the hairdresser if you pay an extra few quid, not in my experience anyway.
if you want to save money, and don't think a shared house will save you enough (don't forget that even if the rent isn't much cheaper, your bills will be reduced significantly) then consider lodging would save you a bit more.
don't think there's anything wrong with you trying to get your rent reduced - if you'd rather spend it on booze and haircuts that's up to you - no point paying more than the going rate.
personally i would have been a lot more succinct - don't bother listing loads of reasons and ranting on about it, would have been more effective to say "i note you are advertising an identical property for X. i would therefore like to enter into a new tenancy for Y when the present one expires. please let me know if this is acceptable" or something along those lines.0 -

Thanks for your nice post..
I dont actually get why everyone else is getting so excited and abosrbed in my haircut tbh! lol
I dont get any sort of fancy gel cut or anything, i wouldnt ever even trust any 'salon' style shop to cut my hair,
as i like it in a short mens style so get it done in my local 'mens only' barbers.
I do wish that in the email i hadnt included half my life story and said to him what reasons 'i had been planning on using before i found out about the current main reason'.. lol
And instead had just said ''hi i s would like to renew for another year, i see that your current asking price is £X, and im happy with that''.
But cant turn back time now.
And to the other poster above, i was homeless 3x betwen ages of 11 and 14.0 -

It is copyright infringement, though I'm not sure there have been criminal prosecutions for this in the UK? Always a first - of course - and given that you can get lots of films on freeview, free/cheap DVDs from lovefilm etc., I certainly wouldn't take the risk. And I've got no plans to join the police.
Of course, if Angel had been watching anything that breached the UK's (pretty strict) decency laws on their laptop - or has accidentally downloaded anything inappropriate in the course of viewing illegal films etc  - that might be more of an issue if it ever got noticed... Not saying that Angel has been doing this, of course.0 -
I personally dont 'download' anything illegally or film anything illegal.
Not worth risking my career to save a few quid watching a film.
Yet you are quite proud of the fact that you have been illegally working and not paying any tax, when the HMRC catch up with you will find it a far more serious offence than watching a few illegal downloads.
Oh and do let us know when your landlord gives you notice to quit.:rotfl:0 -
People are focusing on your haircuts because the amount you spend on them is extortionate and you can't afford it! You should be looking for ways YOU can reduce you outgoings, not relying on your LL to do that for you. Put it this way - if it came down to it, what's more important - a nice haircut or a roof over your head? Go figure.0

Let's hope HMRC don't catch up with you OP, once they do they are a nightmare!!!!

I created this topic to ask about how to get rent lowered, not to have my budget lowered since ive done that to the biggest extent i can myself.
Tip for the future: if you don't want comments about your budget, then don't post your detailed "life costs sheet" (together with your entire life story) next time

I didn't realise the recruitment crisis in the police force was this bad.0
