strange things overheard at the PO

  • I was stuck in a queue behind a rather unpleasant woman who criticised the customer in front for queuing (in her judgement) too far from the counter. When he explained in a foreign accent that he was merely obeying the sign asking customers to respect the privacy of those being served, she argued that if he "belonged" in this country he would know not to take signs like that literally, and she launched into a lengthy rant about immigrants coming over here and getting jobs, houses, benefits etc. Eventually, the foreigner politely asked her what she did for a living, and she seemed taken aback by the question. "What do I do? I was BORN here!"
  • The last time I was in the PO their machines were being slow at sorting out my recorded delivery request, so to pass the time the lady and i started discussing the weather (it was when we had the bad weather Thurs eve/Fri morning last week). I said something inane and jokey like, "ah, it's always at Christmas when things go down, isn't it - the Christmas technology curse" and the lady in the queue behind me piped up in what I can only describe as a self-righteous voice with, "no, i think it's the weather, ACTUALLY". Awkward....
Saving for a return trip to America, 3 weeks on Route 66 for our honeymoon just wasn't long enough!
  • I was in the other week and there was a woman with her two kids in using the church and send service. The worker explained that the photos of her daughter and herself weren't acceptable as there was glare from their glass. She launched into a rant about being discriminated against as she was Nigerian and that they had to accept the photo. They told her the applications would be rejected due to the glare and that she should go to the photo booth in the corner to retake them. She refused. She then told the guy "you will fix it. I go to do my shopping and will be back for my papers in one hour" The poor guy tried to explain but she was having none of it and marched out of the shop leaving him looking flabbergasted. I wish I'd been there to see the look on her face when she went back

Whats that? Is that where they say a prayer over the paperwork so the pernickity basts at the passport place will actually issue a passport, even if your signature is 1 microdot outside the box?

Years ago I had a long argument in a different post office over asking for POP (I think) for a prepaid envelope. It was for a company I did a lot of work for and always posted the same way and never had a problem previously. He argued for about 10 minutes, I insisted he look it up which he finally did and I was right. He handed it over with bad grace, plus some stamps I'd bought and my change.

When I got to the door I realised I'd been give the wrong change so I went back, only to be told it was too late as I'd left the shop - I hadn't and he had clearly seen that. I said I hadn't but he accused me of trying to pull a fast one.

I shrugged my shoulders, said 'I'll keep it then' and walked out. With the change from a £50 note when I'd given him £20 :T.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
