The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Conceive when its just not happening (12m+)

Two encouraging stories:
One woman I know vaguely has a new baby. I saw her with her toddler and the baby the other day (and felt jealous!) Well it turns out that the toddler was conceived with IVF after 6 yrs TTC - and then she conceived the baby spontaneously 6 months later AND she's 43!
++++++++
A friend of mine's SIL TTC for 8 years, nothing. She had IVF, it worked. Two years later she had IVF again and had twins. One year later she conceived spontaneously - aged 40. There IS hope, when it seems there is none..!
This is exactly my story! 6 years ttc first child, who was assisted (ivf cycle had to be converted to iui as not enough follies for egg collection). 4 months after he was born, whilst still fully breastfeeding we discovered I was pregnant with no 2. No 3 as you know from the graduates list was problematic again, but we got there in the end, aged nearly 41.
Good luck to everyone for 2011. I know how grinding and soul destroying this journey is, and I hope the new year will bring good news for you. We finally managed to conceive our last one, just a few months after being told that our only possible chance of success was ICSI and the prospects were slim due to age. So we are proof that even with significant fertility issues, it can still be possible to get there naturally in the end.
Hugs to all.0 -
hello may i join you ladies?
some may have seen my name sometimes on the TTC thread but i think i'm ready to move on.
I'm 38 1/2 and my OH is 45, neither of us have ever had children. We started trying 12 months ago and nothing has happened.
I am very overweight and have always had irregular cycles (even before i was over weight), i am trying to lose weight but it's a struggle. My doctor has run tests on me and says i have low progesterone levels, which means i'm annovulatory. I've also had an internal scan (second one) which shows my womb is on the top side of normal but that they can only find one ovary. In 12 months i have had 7 cycles and i'm currently on CD73, i know i'm not pregnant as i've done enough test to prove it.
My doctor has tried to refer me to the hospital but they refuse to even see me due to my weight.
I am on metformin as he thinks i could be insulin resistant but after two months blood test showed no changes to my progesterone levels. I'm still keeping on the metformin but have to admit to being terrible at remembering to take all 3 tablets.
Sorry for the essay, hope you don't mind me tagging along.0 -

Hi Lemontree - welcome. Sorry it's proving tough. Sucks, doesn't it?
If I were in your shoes I'd do two things -
-Go private (can you afford to? Can you afford not to?). I have a friend who's significantly overweight, prob. about 16/17 stone. NHS wouldn't treat her so she went private - had IVF, and it worked.
-Try to find a new way to lose weight. I know it's tough (I'm 5'4 and 12 and a half stone and that may be part of my problem). Can you afford to do something radical like LighterLife? If not, even something like Slimming World might help. You've probably tried lots of things, but weight is really key, especially with those long cycles. It does sound like PCOS-like symptoms, and losing 10% of your weight can apparently help a lot.
Otherwise...just keep trying, and good luck.0 -
Welcome Lemon Tree - hope you manage to lose some weight for next year and they sort out your hormones.
VK - Everything crossed for you hope you get your Christmas wish.
My Mum told me last night about a girl she knows who is 38 and had just had twins via IVF on her second attempt, but they were 7 weeks prematures and one is not feeding well at all but the Drs are not worried and he will get better. I am just hoping for third time lucky....roll on January.BEST WIN LAST YEAR - MULBERRY HANDBAGSENDING STICKY VIBES TO THOSE WHO NEED THEM0 -
Hi Lemon Tree:wave:
Can you ask your doctor to give you something to induce AF?0 -
hi thank you all for your kind welcome.
I'm trying to lose weight but have just had to leave SW because i can't really afford it. Going it alone again.
QQ i've been to the doctors before when my cycle gets uber long but he's never offered me anything to kick start it again. I did get some tablets a little while ago to hold it off whilst i was on holiday and that seemed to stop the constant spotting problem i'd been enduring.0 -

If ov is no show this month, I'll take them so I could induce AF 2 weeks before I meet DH in Feb:p I have Clomid & injections to induce ov too:cool:0 -
Hi Lemon Tree, in terms of weight loss do you have anything at home to help motivate you ? For example, taking the dog for a good walk each evening or getting OH to join in a weight loss challenge for New Year etc. A few years ago I signed up to a charity event that meant I had to walk 20 miles, I was completely out of shape so I had to build up to it. I set a plan to walk 1 mile every other day and gradually increased it - it worked for me at the time and its something that I will probably try again for 2011.
VK - I think I have your cold, Lol, feeling really rubbish with head cold and cannot stay warm. Worse though is that I have sore tummy as if AF is round the corner but its far too soon for that.
Have MIL coming for dinner tonight so i'm actually glad to be a little under the weather - she takes forever to leave after dinner so at least I can slope off to bed and let OH deal with her :rotfl:0
