I have a heart murmur and they wouldn't let me. Very frustrating as I have never had any treatment or medication, can I not tell them next time or will I be on a system somewhere that will tell them. I'd give blood, bone marrow - anything I've got going spare, but they won't let me!
They have a duty of care to both the potential donor and the recipiant.
Your heart condition would be a concern for them but if you contact your regional donor department and ask for a face to face interview to discuss the possibility of you becoming a donor, I am sure they would oblige. They might bring you in for a test run under extra supervision to see how you 'perform' :)

    What a lovely thread :)

Hubby and I have been donating for a few years, me not so successfully because iron isn't always high enough but they always thank me for trying and encourage me to come back next time.

My eldest son, inspired by his parents went along to the first session after his 17th birthday and is now a very happy donator and we're very proud of him :T

Keep up the good work everyone!!
  • I'm not allowed as I had transfusions when I was a baby..it makes me so angry- I don't have any blood-borne diseases, and I want to give something back.

They revue the situation regularly, the day might come when you will be allowed to donate, they are playing things on the ultra safe side at the moment.

I gave blood again last week, and hate the plasters they put on afterwards, the big white ones, they always hurt to pull off later.

Well done Kacie, isn't pulling off the plaster good for garnering some sympathy from others though?

Ask for a bandage. I'm allergic to plasters and I have a cotton pad and bandage wrapped around my arm. Only has to stay on the same length of time as a plaster. :)

I have donated another pint today. :j

My normal donor session was cancelled due to the weather along with a lot of other sessions. I managed to find the next nearest one to me and rebooked for today.

There is a blood shortage this time of year. People have other things on their mind or the weather plays a part but blood is still needed, so go along and give a pint if you are able it will be appreciated by many. :T

  • I was always one of those folks who always "intended" to give blood, but never did!
at 43 and 2 major surgeries for melanoma, both followed by a good few transfusions, I was so humbled to think someone had donated their blood that was now helping me get better.

I so regret now not doing it as I am not allowed to after having transfusions!

Please give blood if you are able to, I didn't - but sorely wish I had.
