Do Something Amazing- Give Blood

Gave my latest drop in the ocean today.
The donor centre that I go to is holding special sessions at the weekends after xmas and again after new year to try to boost stocks after the holidays. Please see if you can fit in some time to go along to your local centre, it could be they will have similar special sessions arranged.
I know it is low on most peoples priority list at that time of year but even an aging atheist like me is still of the opinion that the gift of life is the most precious gift of all but the gift of life's blood runs it a close second.0 -
I'm feeling totally useless right now because I had surgery in July and obviously can't donate until early next year. It's frustrating with Christmas and the new year coming up because i know that stocks are going to be low and that I won't be able to help.0

I have had a quick look through some of the posts but it will take a long time to read all 27 pages!
It's great to see how many people are giving blood and trying to encourage others to do the same. Unfortunately I haven't been able to make it at all this year (except maybe once?) as I went to places with a risk of Malaria in February and again in September, so I have to wait another 6 monthsCan't wait to get back in there and start giving again though! I have looked into the bone marrow but because of the job I do, I can't have the time off work that is needed at such short notice
Well done to all of you! :T
My wife and I both had our donation refused because we have been to a "at risk" area. We were told that it would be at least a year before we could donate again, we`re scottish, is the English transfusion service less strict or have we been misinformed? Could anybody clarify?
We haven`t donated for over a year now and really miss that feel good factor we get when we make this small but important gesture.
Thanks.0 -
Does anyone know if they still have weight limits? When I looked a few years back, you had to weigh over 8 stone or they wouldn't let you donate. Couldn't see anything on the website, so does anyone know if this policy is still in force?0

i am in the same situation as you i had surgery in july, also 12 months previously - when i could give blood inbetween (normal liver results etc) i had a cold and had to cancel .. then back under consaultant due to comlications and could not give blood. i have not given blood in 2 1/2 years due to medical problems.. i am chomping at the bit to donate again.. but will have to wait a good few months yet.
it will happen - i just need to wait!!Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0 -

Well done!
I just made my 48th donation this week and mine go up two at a time because I give platelets (some people go up three at a time!). If you live near a permanent donor centre e.g. Southmead Hospital in Bristol, then why not ask about becoming a platelet donor? Platelets are only good for five days and can be needed every other week by some cancer and leukaemia patients.
I'm off to USA on Wednesday so that's me banned from donating for another 28 days after I return so my next (and 50th!) donation will be on December 29th.0 -
