It asks if you've taken any medication in the past week, if I had a couple of ibuprofen on Thurs when I'm going on Tues would it affect my ability to give blood?

    No.
They are also concerned about YOUR health when they ask this question.
If it's just a headache then theirs no problem.
Some of the questions are to may sure that YOU are ok and not just that your blood is.
They are very careful to make absolutely sure that you won't be badly affected by giving.
    2. It asks for allergies, I have a food allergy (lime), but no others, would that be a problem?

I'm allergic to lots of things (nickel, chlrone, grass pollen, penicillen etc.)
    So shouldn't be a problem.

I was in giving my latest donation today and it was one of the quickest 'triples' that I have done for ages, only 72 minutes. I wont be going back for 5 weeks so plenty of time to re-charge my platelets.

How did EP and partner get on during their first visit?

I gave my 9th donation yesterday, a bit of a mistake really as I have friends over on Friday nights and we have a few beers.
I got drunk really quick and felt really whacked out, and today I'm feeling really tired, struggling to keep my eyes open now tbh.

i've been drinking coke and eating flat out today to make up for the fact I ate hardly nothing all day yesterday, i didnt even have time to stop for squash and bickies at the session!

The donor suite at Ninewells hospital in Dundee has had a small facelift and it felt like I was in the wrong place at first but hey-ho the needle goes in and I settle back for an hour or so and chalk another one up, I should get 2 more in before the end of the year.

It is tough for the donor service at this time of year as people's minds are usually on other things and they find it difficult to fit an hour into their busy lives to go along and give a little of their's that could mean a whole lifetime to someone in need.

Give an hour, give a life.

My six months enforced break post-surgery has now passed but I'm still banned from donating as I only got back from a business trip to the USA last weekend (which means a 28 day ban due to it being West Nile Fever season). I have a platelet donation appointment booked for November 10th, which I'm quite excited about as it will take me to 50 donations.

    Another pint donated today. :)

It'll be a good one as it has a glass of red wine in it. ;)

  • Hi All,

I have had a quick look through some of the posts but it will take a long time to read all 27 pages!

It's great to see how many people are giving blood and trying to encourage others to do the same. Unfortunately I haven't been able to make it at all this year (except maybe once?) as I went to places with a risk of Malaria in February and again in September, so I have to wait another 6 months :o Can't wait to get back in there and start giving again though! I have looked into the bone marrow but because of the job I do, I can't have the time off work that is needed at such short notice

Well done to all of you! :T

    Hi All,

My job has changed since I became a platelet donor and these days I do not get time off to donate, I have to make my hours up for any that I have lost.

As to the bone marrow register, if called on I would not think twice, everything else would have to take second place including work. I imagine that I would get a doctors certificate as it does involve an operation and my employer would have no choice but to accept it.
  • If it would work that way and a doctors note would be given, then it would possibly be ok.

My shifts are organised 2 months in advance and leave has to be requested more than 2 months in advance as my job and hours are not very flexible. When they want something from us, they are as flexible as you like, when we want or need something, it's a straightforward no without discussion.

If you are 'sick' more than twice in 6 months then you get a disciplinary meeting which would go on your record.

Maybe when I change jobs I will register, I'm not ruling it out entirely but at the moment I would rather keep my job. I wasn't saying I won't register, I have looked at it very carefully, but right now it's not possible for me to get the time off at that short notice.

Edit: I have a feeling I'm not allowed to give Bone Marrow while doing this job.. it's only recently that blood donating is allowed.
