Would you go on holiday?

Hi All

I have a bit of a problem deciding whether to go on holiday or not. Let me outline the considerations:

My husband and I have a chance to go to Canada and America in September, mostly staying with family. My mum will pay for the airline tickets but we will need to pay for a hire car, some accomodation and spending money.

Hubby is self-employed and would lose approx £2k in wages.
I work part-time so I get paid holiday
Our son is 16 and will be at college if we go.
We do have a couple who are willing to house sit (we have 2 cats and dog and of course the teenage oink)
We bought our house in May and there is plenty that needs doing, ie a new kitchen at some point that needs to be saved up for.

So the net cost to us would be approx £3.5k (includes loss of income). We are in a position to save up this amount before we decide.

What would you do given the teenage oink, pets, money, economy etc.

I would holiday in the UK/somewhere cheaper.

If you husband is self emplayed wouldnt it also be a case of missed work leads (cant think of a better word sorry!) as well as the 2k?

I would plough the money into the house TBH :D

I would stay at home and get on with what you need to do in the house too. Maybe spend some time with your child too.

What's with calling him/her a 'teenage oink'

If you found them calling you a geriatric pig on a public website would you like it?

Show some respect then they might respect you.

If you can afford to save the money beforehand and can afford the holiday without getting into debt I would go on holiday. Life's just too short for all work and no play.

Is Canada & the US somewhere you really want to visit?

If you don't go, will you have the opportunity to go in the future? If not then I would seize the opportunity and go, but that's just my opinion. I love travelling.

You say you need a new kitchen. If you can save the holiday money between now and September, then presumably that is only going to delay you getting a new kitchen by 3 months. Would you rather go away or have the kitchen that bit sooner?
  • Go to canada and america, life's for living, moneys for spending, never heard of anyone on their death bed saying "i wish i'd stayed at work" :D

My my Maya you are touchy. If I wanted advice on my parenting skills I would have asked for it. FYI, I love my son very much and we both have a similar sense of humour when it comes to calling each other creative names, ie I cannot wire a plug without blowing up the house so he calls me a 'div'.
