sirmonster I second this if you want a cheaper option, think I may have even used the same seller! Though I'm sure the FRER ones work just as well! I don't use OPKs anymore (seem to never get a line 'cuz my timing was off) but when I did, I liked the eBay cheapies as they were very small and discreet (i.e. good for using at work ;))

Ebay cheapies work fine for OPKs - I've used this seller a couple of times now

ellie - to swine flu and :mad::eek: to the break-in! I know how you feel, we had our back door kicked in as a "welcome" to Oxford a month after we moved. Delightful. Thank heavens you weren't in and the place wasn't trashed :grouphug: I do hope it was an opportunist, its really disconcerting for a while afterwards, though as we were renting we had the agency deal with all the security which saved us a lot of hassle.

I never felt scared afterwards but I looked with new eyes at the passers by and when we bought our own place I made sure we got top-notch locks. We do have a dog, but knowing him he'd not even wake up if the door was kicked in

What got me was what they nicked - the TV remote but not the TV  how annoying!! They took the CD player, which had disc 1 of a 2 part set in (so we now have 2 copies of disc 2), and totally missed my laptop sitting in plain view! They did however, take my favourite towel, but I didn't notice until the next morning after having a go at OH for taking it! :o

And yes, it was me who said "chuff" :rotfl: Don't know where I picked it up from, I'm a midlander who says "bath" and "path" with a short "a" and "batch" instead of "bap/breadroll" and seemingly seem to be one of the few who regularly use the word "yampi" I am a conundrum indeed... :rotfl:

suzy - when I used OPKs I tested at about 2pm every day. I think the best way is twice a day, but definately not using FMU. I don't know how that would work with your shifts though.

Does anyone know if FMU is really only the first wee on waking? I mean, are all the hormones synthesised overnight or during sleep? So if you sleep 7am-1pm is your waking urine then the same as a normal FMU? I may go and google to see if I can work it out.... yes I'm a big fat geek, I know!! :o

Right, that was quick! Google says:
For women who work night shift your first morning urine will be the urine you void after you slept during the day.

Well, from a quick google, it seems to be that its concentrated urine that's needed, i.e. 4 hours or more. I'm still trying to find something which says when LH is synthesised (from a source more reliable than fertility websites). I'm sure that its just the concentration thats the key thing, so your sticks have maximum chance to pick up LH/HCG etc.

  • Goodness, I'm glad I don't work shifts; it sounds pretty confusing when trying to test your OV dates and I'm already easily confused.:o.

good luck with it though and remember that you can also use the other methods; i.e to quote the immoral bitzer; "check your chuff".:rotfl:

The break in was more of a shock than anything; just never never expected it to happen; don't know why as most people I know have experience it to some extent.

I'm not scared as such but I am sleeping with a basin wrench just in case! Luckily, it's a house that I'm selling and I've never liked the house; it's never felt like home to me. My mum owned it for 18 years and I bought it off her 2 years ago when she retired. I can't wait to get rid of the blasted place now and hopefully, in three weeks time I will be! Keep everything crossed (aside from the obvious!)

Ah Ellie what a horrible thing to happen! Fingers crossed for you for 3 weeks then and you can move into your wonderfl new place and put it all behind you!
And as for us oldies getting BFP first well it would be nice but not essential, can't be bitter about BFP's or wouldn't have much of a business!:rotfl:Trying very hard to get my babycakes business properly up and running and it's been a nightmare and a joy at the same time sourcing all the toys and blankets and things! I love doing them so if I can actually make a decent income from them then I'll have a nice versatile little business. I have a friend doing it in another part of the country and her cakes are fabulous. She's now making enough for her to have given up her teaching job to be a stay at home mum!
  • I've been too shy to post on this thread before, although I've been lurking since about Christmas time, so hello to everyone.... I've been prompted out of hiding by rik1978's post on Friday, as she seems to have gone through something very similar to me, and I wanted to pass on some big hugs to her. I've just come through my second miscarriage, and was expecting that the hospital would now do some tests given my age (I'm 38, DH is 43). But the doctor said they wouldn't test until I'd had three MCs. Gee thanks.... Does anyone have any experience of the tests that are done, and have a view of whether they're worthwhile or not? Is it worth me fabricating MC #3 in order to get tested soon, or pay for tests privately like rik is considering, or just sit tight and hope for third time lucky...? I'm a scientist too, and want answers, but realise that this may not be possible. winnie72 - you mentioned you'd been referred for tests because of your age - may I ask how old you are...?!

My "story" is that we'd been trying quite a while without success. Once I read all the advice on these threads about how to recognise ovulation with CM, etc, I realised we'd probably been concentrating our efforts at not quite the right time, IYSWIM! A couple of months later, I was amazed that we were successful. However, at the 10wk scan we found out that all was not well, and it was a missed MC. Opted for the conservative management option rather than D&C - big mistake - ten days later ended up spending 3days in hospital and off work for three weeks with severe anaemia. Sounds similar to what rik experienced with her second MC. I was even more amazed to fall pregnant again 2 months later (presumably taking advantage of what I perhaps wrongly assumed to be an old wives tale of increased fertility after a MC). Unfortunately, I once again had a missed MC, but this time it had stopped growing earlier, so I decided to be brave (stupid?) and go for the conservative option again. Very scary, but when it actually happened, it was fortunately nowhere near as bad as the first time.

I read your question, SkintGypsy, about symptoms. I'm not exactly an expert, and I'm afraid the experience I do have won't help very much. With MMC #1, I definitely felt pg - mainly sore breasts and not sleeping well/bad dreams. No sickness though, but my mum and sister never had any either, so perhaps lucky genes. But the symptoms stopped about a week before my 10wk scan, which I guess is when things went wrong. With MMC #2 however, apart from a couple of days feeling queasy right at the start, my only symptom was a missed period, and so I never felt pg, and it wasn't a surprise when they confirmed it had happened again. So I guess, if you can, take comfort from the symptoms as much as possible. And best of luck....

What I've found particularly hard is that my little sister is expecting her first baby three weeks before our #1 was due. I was so looking forward to sharing this experience with her, and now I can't, and I worry that my situation is putting a downer on what should be such a happy time for her.

Bit of a long post, but I'm glad to have got it off my chest. Thanks to everyone who shares their words of wisdom and experience on this site. Even though I've been lurking up to now, I've found it a source of much support and reassurance, just realising that many others have sadly gone through this, and that people get through the other side.
    Big hugs to everyone.

    Hi Astro,
firstly welcome and sorry to hear you've been through it. I haven't had a mc myself so can't really help any further on that front but I do know that Sarahs999 on the TTC 12 month plus thread has been in the same situation as you. She is now going through some of the tests with her consultant and desperately seeking answers. It is dreadful having to go through it 3 times before they will do anything and I can only begin to imagine the pain it causes. However I think it is set at 3 because mc is much more common than you would imagine and I'm sure it's probably higher than current statistics show, so I think that 2 may not be particually uncommon but 3 does show a potential problem. On a positive note my friend's sister had 5 mc's before she fell pregnant with her little boy and she now has a gorgeous little boy and beautiful little girl so don't lose sight of what it's all for because she'll tell you that although the pain of losing 5 will never go away completely it is now put to the back of her mind as she enjoys her beautiful children.
  • Hi there Astro_k. I'm 37 and up here they consider that older and will refer you if you to be referred. Well who wouldn't take them up on it. They took the bloods for my first lot of tests whilst I was in for the treatment of my missed miscarriage. I decided to take the tablets they offer rather than the D&C as it seemed to just make my body do what it had to do.

May be worth asking if your GP can refer you as mine was willing to do it if the hospital hadn't already.
