  • Aunt Bessie's frozen mashed potato discs are a bit watery and tasteless at the best of times, but palatable with lots of butter and nutmeg. The end product just does not have much body.
Talking about cheating, I was wondering whether or not we could brown the potatoes on top with a chef's blow torch? It would be necessary to cover the top edge of the pot with foil to protect it and I think the same could be done with a ceramic slow cooker dish when making Lancashire hot pot etc.:D

Ah! It all becomes clear now... :-)

By the way, the price quoted on that post last year was so ridiculously cheap (compared to the RRP of £149) that I can't help thinking it was Costco clearing out their stocks. If that's the case, I wouldn't set my heart on buying one from them at that price now, as they must have cleared their shelves months and months ago! :-)

Sorry, haven't been on the forum for ages. It was me who was the lucky buyer at that price and yes, I'm certain it was a 'sell off' - it was the only one left. Still feel blessed! I've been looking out in Costco since then for another for my Mum and they haven't been there. I did see them in Makro before Xmas for around £89 plus VAT but, as I haven't been in since then. Sorry, I feel a bit guilty that I was so lucky. However, I must say I wouldn't have any hesitation about paying more as I use mine so much.

A quick update on prices, I was in Makro last week and they still had them for £89 plus VAT. Sorry not to be able to comment on the cake front BarDav - I did try one but it ended up like a load of old rubber - possibly because I was trying to adapt a recipe which should have gone in the oven! I too would love to hear about others' baking experiences!

I've never baked in mine. But if the cake hasn't gone brown on top, might it be because the gadget doesn't apply heat from above? Don't know -- just guessing.

For anyone who uses the Delay Timer on the Intellichef to make sure that their rice (or whatever) is ready at the time they want to eat, don't forget to change the clock now that British Summer Time is here! Ask me how I know... ;-)

  • Hi - newbie here. Thanks for all the great info about the intellichef. So great, I went out and bought one this afternoon. Got it from Makro - it was labelled as £109 on the shelf, but the box had £89.98 on it. When scanned of course it said £109, so I objected and the woman went and had a conflab. She came back and entered it as 'ex-display' at the cheaper price - yay! I hadn't checked the other boxes on the shelf but I suspect they were all at the cheaper price, given what a previous poster on this forum has said. You have to add VAT at Makro, though, so it was about £105. I've seen it cheaper on eBay, but you have wait ...

Now, my cooking question ... I have some 'seasoned belly slices' from Waitrose to cook. They look like strips of belly pork about half an inch thick and about 6-8 inches long, folded in on themselves and tied with string. I read someone earlier suggesting that s/he was going to cook some meat on a bed of vegetables, which sounds good. So, any suggestions for how to cook the belly pork? Fry first, then add veg? Or fry veg first and add pork on top, with liquid/stock to cook it in?

Finally, thanks to Avocet for the blogsite recipes - good stuff, but more please!
  • Well in the end I kind of made up a recipe. Potatoes, carrots, shallots, garlic, tin of tomatoes, bit of hot water and chicken bouillon, celery, belly pork ... bunged it all in and Stewed for an hour, then switched it to Slow cook for 5 hours, but wth the intention of turning it off after about three. It seemed to be doing quite slow after that time, so I added cornflour, turned it off and then on to reheat for 25 mins and left the lid up ... it thickened nicely and reduced, and was absolutely lovely when I ate it. Pork done nicely and all the veg soft. And only one pot to wash! Will now be looking for more meaty stuff from Waitrose ... probably try a chicken curry next.
  • Yes, I agree, there's normally too much liquid ... unfortunately I'd started cooking this way too early, so I had to go to Slow cook mode!
  • I have just started using my Intellichef.

I have started a Facebook group for Intellichef owners, just thought it would be a great place to share recipes and let each other know what we are doing with ours. Just search for Intellichef Owners on Facebook.
