I bought the JML Star Chef after reading all the posts. So far I have cooked a small joint of beef, egg fried rice, wheat-free banana cake and gluten free pasta which cooks better on the rice setting of 15mins, rice in the bottom with fish and vegs in steamer basket, at same time, so only takes 15 mins. The Soup/Stew is similiar to High on Slow Cooker. You can use the fry setting with lid open I have cooked chips in this as well, don't use too much oil and it tends to brown the base of food, the same can happen with cakes but you can use a slicon 8in round disk which will stop this. Today I am going to cook to cook a fruit cake.

I bought this because I was going back to work and wanted to use the timer. As all with all the machines the instructions are useless, basically they seem to work on the a similiar temperature for a similiar program and the automatic programs just allow a different time setting. The programs look to be shorter times on the star chef. To check the temperature for Soup/Stew I added water and checked with a cooking thermometer, sad really.
  • Hi

I'm curious have been looking at a variety of cooking equipment. I love my steamer and use it most days although hate the 4 part cleaning and general mess it causes.

I specifically want to buy a rice cooker which can also cook veggies, but came across the Intellichef as a comparision to the Tefal 1-4 slow cooker, rice cooker, poridge maker and steamer.

How does Intellichef really perform with Rice? Amazone review seems to quote that it comes out as a clumpy mess, rather than individual and firm. Did this person just mess up.

How does it perform for rice and steaming veggies?

    thanks

It's perfect for sticky rice. Forget about proper risotto.
Personally I love it. Once you have got used to it and worked out the right quantities of rice and water, it's lovely.

If rice is your main priority though, I would think about buying a dedicated rice cooker.

With it you can boil, steam, stew and slow cook your vegs. You can stir fry as well. Plenty of choice for the lazy cook!
  • thanks Terra

Actually sticky rice and me don't mix, prefer fluffy rice where the grains are loose,

My interets really is in making fancy rice, recently picked up some books on persian cookery - super YUM! and some of the rice dshes are really uneque to that part of the world, and I want to try it.

I also love my steamer, but hate the amount of washing up, because there are 3 or 4 bits to do.

I don't really use my slow cooker but that may be beacuase its not got a timer.

I suspect what ever I buy it will mainly be used for steaming and then rice.

Tefal has a lovelt square looking rice/steamer
and a 4 in 1 rice, porridge steamer and slow cooker - which isn't as pretty
and then their is this 9 in 1 thing you are all chatting about....

Thanks for your help, I may do an office poll.

LOL can't make my mind up
  • well the deed is done, Amazon are delivering within the next two hours. I decided that I might as well given when I visited the Tefal thingy it was huge and looked like one of those Henry hoovers. Worst case if I hate it, it will sit in the cupboard.

If anyone is considering Amazon have is on a discounded rate, (although there are two versions of the same thing, one at around £120, and one at £160 - both are exactly the same model from what I can discern).

Thanks Terra for your advice, I guess I will try out the rice maker in due course

    You are welcome.

One, the cheapest, is sold by Amazon itself. The other one by a different company.
  • it arrived, will need to think up what to try it out on. Maybe I'll do a cake tomorrow.

Considering how much I adore my Intellichef and promising so much early on, I've been a miserable poster to this thread but on my occasional visits I do appreciate all your comments.

Anyway, I was in a store called JTF today and saw an Intellichef clone (I think one of the foreign versions) for the bargain price of £39.99 plus VAT. Fascinated, I opened the box and on the face of it, it looked very, very similar, although I wasn't cheeky enough to take it completely out of the box to inspect the quality of the bowl. I was almost tempted to pick one up just in case my old faithful packs up!

If you are keen on the Intellichef, give JTF a Google to see if there is a local branch. They are supposedly a trade warehouse but it is very easy to join - and they are actually giving out guest cards very freely at the moment (they gave me a dozen at the till to hand out last time I was there). More generally, it is probably of interest to the moneysaver and you can take a look at their mailers online.

Thank goodness I have found this forum and the bibliobubble blog !!! I have bought the Delicook Superchef as it is called here in France and as I must be the least tecchie person on the planet I was having a struggle with the French intructions. I have downloaded the instructions in English from the Morphy Richards site, but have a question. The instructions say I should start by setting the clock to the current time. Is it necessary to do this for the cooker to work or can I just set the cooker to cook something and then unplug it and put it away?
Sorry to be so dim. :o

Not dim at all, jandot. Sorry for the delay in replying, but I have been away on holiday. As far as I know, you don't have to set the time unless you want to use the Delay Timer feature (which I quite often do), but it isn't hard to set and you only have to do it once. Apart from adjusting it for Daylight Saving/Summer Time, of course, which I forgot about until after the event, and wondered why my rice hadn't cooked!

Hope you like the machine. Whereabouts in France are you?
