I'm already with TalkTalk, part way through a 3 month contract for landline and have 14.99 broadband with them. Must admit broadband has been fine for me so far, no different than when I was with BT. My reason for asking about the 18185 number was to phone mobiles or the 0870 numbers, or have I got the wrong end of the stick and this doesn't work with the 0870 numbers?

Yes you could use your bundled UK minutes to route calls via 1815 via the 02 access number, or, you could still use the 08 access to route them. For 0870 calls you would be charged at 4p weekdays and 2p weekends. Mobile calls would be charged at 10p weekdays (only 5p per minute if you dialled via 1815 access code) and 2p at weekends. All charges are per minute and you have to add on the 4p start up charge.

You could certainly make lots of long calls for £20/month if you wanted the Talk3 plan just to make calls to Canada!
Yes, disregarding the connection charge, £20 would pay for 66 hours 40 minutes using 18185 from a BT landline!

Now my wife can talk but even she couldn't manage more than 9 or 10 hours continuously.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

The Talk3 plan only costs £8.99.

With this offer you have to take Talk3 with international calls option for £9.99.

The line rental has gone up to £11. It was £9.99 and then £10.50. How do we know that the Talk3 plan and line rental won't go on increasing?

You've got to commit for 18 months.

BT plans to launch a Freeview with video on demand service later this year.

ntl:telewest/Virgin Mobile plan to launch a quad service of phone/tv/mobile and broadband.

Cable and Wireless's Bulldog already do a cheaper service with line rental at £10.50 and broadband at £9.75.

You cant use the likes 1899/18866/18185 with it.

Just wondering, what would you need to use these numbers for if (nearly) all of your calls are free anyway?!?

Possibly for overseas calls not included in the bundled countries. You may wish to use 1815 for calls to 0870.

You dont get unlimited international calls only to certain destinations so you might want to use 1899/18185 to reach other destinations cheaper. You also might want to make cheaper mobile, and NGN calls via 18185.

Yes 1280 BT override works if you just CPS your calls to TT,but if you take TT line rental it does not.

He said they had a number *like* 1280 that did same trick to reroute back through BT - will try and find out what it is - that takes care of NGN numbers (and I wonder... could you reroute to BT then 18185 ??)

But anyway 18185 is allowed - for now

So, for someone who doesn't make international calls or does to TT destinations, then its reasonable deal??

How much are their mobile rates compared to 18185??

You should be aware that if you transfer your line rental to TalkTalk that you would no longer have the ability to force individual calls via BT by prefixing dialled digits with 1280.

Your last paragraph needs clarification. Even if you do move to TalkTalk and you need to make calls to countries other than those inclusive within the bundle, then it would still be possible to route those calls via 18866/1899/1915 and the like by simply using their 02 or 08 access numbers.

The TalkTalk deal is ground-breaking in the UK. You can expect others to follow within the coming days and weeks.

Thanks Steve, even if my line rental is now with TalkTalk?

Yes, especially when your line rental is with TalkTalk.
