I'm at home today.... bliss. I've cut my hours on the freelance job to one day a week for the next six weeks or so. It's a shame financially but I was finding it really hard going. So I have a day for financial admin/housework/family stuff/battery recharging, and I intend to use it well.

Right now, I'm about to do my first ever online shop, using a £10 off voucher from Tesco. I'm finding it really hard to work out though. Any tips welcome.

Hi Seaxwyn! I've shopped online for groceries for years - its just about being systematic, like in the shop - go to the departments you want, or search for the product, and you're away. Same as usual, be careful of the per kg prices, and NB NB NB Tesco "cheapest alternatives" link in red - they *aren't* always cheaper, I don't know why they don't get done for it in the courts, check the price per kilo v carefully.

Book the delivery slot first - they can go quickly.....

    look at the offers.

You can change and cancel your order! But you have to use the checkout each time, and its no problem.

Check the stuff as soon as you can when it arrives - email or phone immediately, they *are* good about refunding, usually. Take your time - the guy's being paid, after all, this is his *job*.

Thanks Karma! I'm getting there... well my 'basket' is filling up anyway.

It reminds me why I hate Tesco though! Such a poor range. I want to buy basic pollock fillets but they have to be breaded, or in some silly sauce. Grrrrr And it feels weird to buy fruit without feeling it first!

What is the 'write a note' thing?

I think its if you don't want soy in an item, something like that. Or size? You can make it anything you want to be, I guess. I don't use it, I have to say - remember who's putting the stuff in the baskets, after all, its usually some 15 year old or someone resentful of working for minimum wage, sadly ..........

My top tip would be to check the size of the thing you are ordering - I always end up with something either half as big as I was expecting, or enough to last the year! I use the write a note function for things like meat - if I'm not going to use it straight away, I ask for a best before date no earlier than .... Otherwise you can end up with week's food in the fridge that all needs eating in the next two days.

Thanks! It's annoying that they only have the small sizes available to online shoppers. eg biggest pack of loo roll you can get is 4 rolls. And I usually buy huge slabs of fish, but you can only get the little plastic boxes with enough for about 2 people in. Anyway, I'm now on 49.99 so choosing how to spend my last penny to be eligible for my tenner off.

Anyway.... next jobs for today are to pay two bills (hooray!), bully OH into taking some photos for ebay, work 2 hours in the shop (I popped in today and offered to cover over lunch and was snapped up), then find a way of cooking five pumpkiny things I was given by an overproductive neighbour. Any non-soup recipes welcome.

I couldn't find anything bigger than 4 rolls - oh well, I'll be doing another shop next week.

You'll soon get used to it, and it generally works really well in my experience.

The "write a note" thing is useful for writing things like "please get a long sell by date" in......otherwise you are in danger of getting all a delivery full of things that go out of date in 24 hours!

I am liking the idea of a day off right now.......!
