He looks very happy to me too. What a lovely little chap. I hope you all enjoy your holiday.

I'm not qualified to give any advice/comments on this thread as I don't have kids (yet!) I will say, however, that my OH's parents come from Asia and he was eating very spicy foods from a very early age. (The incident where he found his grandma's sherry at 18 months old is also a family favourite!) The result? A very happy, very healthy, very lovely man who, apart from a worrying penchant for extra hot spicy chicken with extra hot peri peri sauce, is absolutely fine.

Can't say the same for me, who has to be in the same vicinity as him after said spicy meal... :rotfl:

You are the best judge of when it's time to wean, and you do not have to set a deadline unless you and your child are ready to do so. However, the Department of Health now recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months (26 weeks). If you feel your baby needs to start solids before this, do talk to your health visitor. The Department of Health used to recommend that babies were started on solids between the ages of four and six months. Then in May 2003, they issued the following statement: "Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months of an infant's life as it provides all the nutrients a baby needs.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

I wonder how widely advertised their May 2003 statment was cos my daughter was born end of March 2003, and I weaned at 16 weeks. At the time I was attending a weekly mums and babies morning run by our HV, lots of other babies similar ages and do not recall every being told advice had changed. I'm glad I wasn't told though, as said previously I was struggling with not weaning before 16weeks, without being told to leave it till 26.

My HV is 40 odd with no children and to be honest talks c**p most of the time. My last HV had no kids either.

Listen to them, smile and nod then do what you feel is right for YOUR child

Totally agree with you (if you add in do lots of research for yourself as well). My health visitor is a bit pointless in my opinion.

I dont think the point ever was the age that this child was being weaned, it was WHAT he was being weaned on ie chocolate, gravy, sausages and beans.

That was my main concern. I have a baby at the same age as the OPs and I am so very aware of how crucial their diet is to them if they are weaned early, and indeed continues to be after 6 months of age.

My little boy was showing signs at 4 months, I held off for as long as possible and started weaning him at 5 months because he was clearly needing solids to make him comfortable.

I was totally aware of how immature his immune system was and so was VERY careful about the foods that I gave.

Yes, I will give my little boy chocolate. One day, but that day will not come until his taste buds are firmly aware that fresh veg and fruit are the way forward.

Children at this age need food that is as pure as possible. IMO, the best way to go when weaning a child early is to introduce pureed vegetables, one at a time (to test for any reaction in skin, behaviour etc) and then start adding other basic foods.

Giving a child chocolate and gravy and processed sausages at 5 months old is totally inappropriate.

I'm a first time Mum and am learning as I go, I also take advice from experienced Mums when it is offered.

Can anyone recommend a car seat for a newborn for a Fiat Seicento Sporting? We will have to take a trip to Halfords or Mothercare at some point but I'd like to have a few suggestions to start with.

    Thanks
  • I don't actually care at what age anyone else weans their child. Really.

But it does irritate me when people claim they 'couldn't wait' - sorry - but hungry babies need more milk.

Just what did the world do before we had blenders and Annabel bloody Karmel?

Alias your little boy is very cute and I don't doubt he is as happy as can be.

You were told, that if the baby was waking up in the night having previously slept thru, and if there were also other signs such as baby showing interest in your food and making a certain 'movement' with their mouth, that this was all signs that baby was ready to move onto solids. Mine had these signs before 16 weeks. A few years previous to ds being born (now 8) you were told to wean at 12 weeks. No one ever told me the rules had changed at midnight on
April 30th 2003.;) You were also told to change the baby onto lumpier food from 7 months as this helped with speech development.

Should the rules change from Nov 30th this year to you don't wean babies till 9 months;) they will be plenty of people pointing out that their own babies were fine being weaned at 6 months.
